What do you people think of it? I dumped Norton because it pissed me off. I downloaded the Free Beta Test version and I'm still waiting for a CD key. (It's been like hours now, this is now pissing me off) Whats the average time in when you guys got your keys? Does AVG catch stuff that norton doesnt?

JUst got the key..appearntly when I tried hotmail, it worked perfectly. This new beta version has nice interface and more specific in the scannings then Nortan did. I can't seem to find if there is a Auto Protect or not. Scanning for virus's now...

AVG has autoprotect as far as I know. It'll pop up and let you know (at least the version i'm running, 6.0.768 free edition).

I hated Norton because Killed my overall performance and boot time. That's why I switched to AVG. AVG seems to be doing a decent job. Just make sure you configure the auto update properly unless you plan to remember to check regularly. AVGs automatic update is less behind the scenes if you will, than Norton's. Itl pop up and you'll end up watching it do it's thing if you've got it scheduled.

For now I plan to stick with AVG.

I've been flirting with AVG for several months now. It definitely has a smaller footprint than Norton AV! I have to get a pay-version for testing as I have quite a few clients that I may want to migrate to AVG from Norton. I believe several publicized tests have shown that AVG actually catches more stuff than Norton -even with the free version!

My only concern is the automation and ease of use. I haven't had any "problems" with the free version I've been testing but I can say that it isn't that dumbed-down for most of my clients. I need a system that will nearly maintain itself with minimal user interaction. Most of my clients can barely "use" a computer let alone manage their antivirus duties. I'm still researching remote administration as a possibility since nearly all of them are on a high-bandwidth internet connection -but not all.

So at the moment, my personal jury is still out on AVG -but it is starting to look pretty good.

Nortan AV killed my boot time too. AVG is much better. I'm not sure if I configured the auto update right but I have to wait in order to find out. AVG also catches stuff Nortan doesn't, so that's a nice plus. I will probably buy the 7.0 edition. This beta thing is pretty impressive. It needs better "User Friendlyness" as roberts said.

We have completely replaced NAV with AVG where I work. The free version (last I looked) was no different then the pay version other then the ability to schedule some things.

We obviously use the pay version and they managed to keep up with all the spamming virus problems last year without totally crippling the PC's speed as NAV seemed to do.

I highly recommend it.

While AVG is cool and all, NOD32 is a much better product in overall presentation and functionality (IMO).

It's not free, but beats the heck out of everything else that I have used.

Cheers.

NOD32 appears to be one of the best AV solutions out there, but if free is what you are looking at, the AVG is pretty good. I currently run AVG Free edition myself and I'm pretty happy with it, I haven't really intentionally tried to throw any viruses at it to test though. Then again I take other measures to try and minimize the chances of me getting any as well. Out of the free solutions I would probably say it is one of the best if not the best. I use it and I like it, I also recommend it to people who want a free AV as well. It has Auto-protect(resident shield or whatever they call it) and email scanning which is probably the two most important features so it works for me. When I get some more spare cash I might try NOD32 though.

My NAV subscription just ran out, only had Nortons because it was free. I just downloaded & setup Avast Anti-Virus. Avast has a bit more control for the user than AVG.
I've had much better luck with the free AV programs.

The only thing wrong with Avast is that it doesn't work. 9 passes / 19 fails isn't a very good record, especially when the last failure was with Windows XP. Avast's scores.

AVG tends to suck with almost everything, except Windows XP. With XP, it's a winner, however. AVG's scores.

On the otherhand, NOD32 did much, much better. NOD32's scores.

Sometimes, you get what you pay for.
