Hello all,
I recently demoed the swan m50w's and I've had the sp2500's for a while... but now I am thinking about a third option.

My AV reciever (onkyo TX-NR709) is not far away and has a 2 channel powered secondary output. What's the feasibility of using that to power a set of bookshelves?

pros? cons? suggestions?

I intend to research this heavily in the morning, just though I'd have [H] users weigh in, if they'd be so kind. Thanks in advanced,
 
You can do it, I think a dedicated receiver would be more convenient though.
 
The Cambridge audio one+ is overpriced. I don't think you need a CD player. Just get a cheap, used receiver or upgrade your HT receiver to a Marantz.
 
what do you want to play through them? if you want to play the sources going to the receiver, yeah, use that zone 2. if you want it for the PC's audio, just get a pair of powered monitors.
 
Yep, I have my gaming consoles hooked up to the AVR so I guess that settles that. Any recommendations as to some good front speakers? I want them to last through to the addition of a 5.1 setup (5/10 years down the line)

I'll try that out. My understanding is 5.1 over optical can be a pain.

It's not a pain.

You just need something that will send 5.1 audio as Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS. Pull out an Audigy or X-Fi for this.

The HTiB will work great.
 
So it's settled, I will try both the 2nd out on my 709 and then a dedicated receiver. with the set of speakers I have now. Should be interesting. I'll post findings.
 
So far so good, the Onkyo speakers, though light weight and seemingly quite cheap have much better sound than either the all in ones, mids and highs are present with far better seperation... I definitely want to go the DIY route going forward.

Question, however... how efficient are HT Receivers? Is my electrical bill going to hurt vs going with an all in one? Having the NR709 on for about an hour driving literally two speakers and utilizing a line output it got hot to the touch. I get the impression I was burning some watts.

Anyone have input?
 
I don't think it'll be that bad. You aren't using 500w constantly.
 
As long as you have your receiver set to Pure Direct it won't draw too much power at idle--that shuts down all the other functionality on the receiver besides the amp. Otherwise an idle receiver can burn through quite a bit of power.
