Is there an automatic HDMI Switch for multiple monitors?

For example:

- one gaming rig in living room with big monitor and controller :)
- a monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse on my desk :)

(Both are powered by the gaming rig.)

I need a product that will automatically switch between the two monitors if I power on big monitor to hdmi 1 or the monitor and m/kb on my desk.

Hi, ARom,

Take a look at the 8X1 Enhanced Powered HDMI Switcher w/ Remote at Monoprice.com and see if it might meet your needs.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Do you know what is the longest length HDMI cable I can buy without losing quality? I think I read somewhere that the signal is interfered if it is too long.

It's not automatic but it will work perfectly for what you need.
You can hook up to 4 devices to the box and 2 screens.
You can route any of the 4 devices to either of the 2 screens at the same time.
Example, you have an Xbox, PC, BD Player, PS3 and your computer screen and TV.
You can send the Xbox to the TV and your PC to your monitor, then if you want to play the PC on the TV then you select the PC on the TV output on the box and it moves the image to your TV.

Most switches are multiple ins and 1 outs and I don't know if they can work backwards.

Awesome, thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. I don't think I'm working backwards though. Right? That was just a FYI to a guy that knows little about this stuff :) ???

Well, if you want 1 device to go to 2 screens, then that is not what most switchers do.
Most switchers are multiple devices to 1 screen.

I've used the basic manual hdmi/dvi switches in reverse as described, with 1 device ouputting to more than 1 screen. These are the push button type boxes. I'm not sure if such routing will work with more complex powered switches.
Manual switches:

Alternatively you could go for a hdmi splitter, so that output is sent to both screens at the same time.

I would love to find an economical (<$100) 1x2 switch (1 source/2 displays) that supports resolutions above 1920x1200.
