Automatic File Sorting

I am making some changes to the way file management is done and wanting to automate as much of it as I can. Does anyone have suggestions for software that will monitor a folder, or run on a schedule that will examine the files and move them to a different folder based on rules? Windows apps preferred but Linux will work too.
