Autofocus necessary?

So I got my Sigma Macro Lens in today, unfortunately I didn't know AF-D won't autofocus on the Nikon D40 body. My question is, should I return it for a lens that will autofocus or is that really necessary for a macro lens? I think it might be ok if I could get better with manual focusing.

you don't really need AF for macro. but if it's something you want, then you should pick up the Nikkor AF-S 60mm which sells for about $450.

It would be a lot easier to take pictures if I had autofocus but I'm not sure that's worth another $170. I'll be using a tripod with this lens so it shouldn't be too bad.

AF for macro photography isn't really necessary. If you want to use the lens for normal shooting though, it'd be much better to have AF.

I haven't shot with the D40 though, so maybe its viewfinder is cramped and makes it hard to tell if the thing you want in focus is actually so.

Trust me, you don't want AF for macro. I don't do serious macro, but I do close ups of all my toys like watches, sunglasses and pc parts. AF just gets in the way, it hunts for a lock and then focuses on the wrong plane. I turn that stuff off and go manual.

I always use manual focus when shooting macro (Canon 100mm macro). I do use AF when I'm using that lens for non-macro stuff though so I'm glad I have it.

Lots of good answers here. I'd suggest if you are going to use this for Macro only, then keep it and use MF only. If you are going to use this for more than just Macro, then replace it.
