for some reason i looked at my autoexec.bat and it looks like
Code:
.ێË“´JÍ!€>°u3ƒ>V
i also looked at my config.sys to try to get ansi colors to work and it looks like this
Code:
.ێË“´JÍ!€>°u3ƒ>V
same thing

should this worry me at all? i've moved autoexec.bat to _autoexec.bat and replaced it with an empty text file but haven't done anything with config.sys. just curious if anyone knows what's going on. my system doesn't seem sluggish or impaired in any way. btw, norton says they're ok.

this is in xp pro

I'd say its almost nothing to worry about ..Since xp dosent run from dos these files arent used as I recall

Just delete them. The only autoexec/config that are ever used is %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\autoexec.nt (config.nt). These are only used if you have an old program that requires the old buffers and files setup.

of course i'd run a scandisk or something, just to make sure your disks are OK.

If the files were originally "OK" and then got corrupted somehow...

Mine are empty. I dont think XP uses them at all, they may just be there for stupid apps, or windows setup, to see if an OS is on a drive.
