Dual 2.8 533 bus, 512kb Xeons, or P4 3.2 800 bus 2MB cache? This is for industrial use, paired with an FX3000 256 MB card, 2GB RAM, WinXP Pro etc. Got a guy I'm giving advice to and I really don't know much about autocad, or what it's optomized for.
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure all CAD apps are SMP-aware. If the specific product you are looking at is SMP aware(check the product specs, or tell us the full product name), then the Dual 2.8 will blow the doors off the 3.2ExpensiveEdition

Autodesks' Autocad 2004, I did some looking before I posted and found a little info indicating SMP support. But was hoping for a definate answer from someone here, and confirmation that the dual setup would give the performance boost expected. I did find some testing from 2002 indicating less than a 5% boost for dual processors, which would make the EE much faster. It all depends on the software though, which I don't know!

I would avoid Windows XP for worksations. Stick with 2k. Otherwise config looks ok. I use a opteron and x2 for mine. I also have dual opty with fx 3000 makes a big dif when loading large assemblies

They've already got xp for the other workstations, so I think they want to keep it as similiar as possible. Thanks for the feedback though.

We have a dual processor ACAD 2k4 machine in our lab, it runs better with dual than single...

Run dual 3.06Ghz (533FSB) Xeons with that 3000FX on XP. It will be an AutoCAD 2004 DEMON! The newest system I just build for AutoCAD 2004 is a 3.0C (800FSB) w/1000FX....couldn't spend quite as much as you....

I remember reading a while back that AutoCAD doesn't get too much of a boost from SMP unless there is a lot of 3D surfaces. Technology has changed and this was about 2000i, so take this as you want.

This was for someone else to use, I was just the guy that chooses the parts. ;)
