I'm very confused about fan controls and whatnot.


My mobo (abit IP35-pro) has the four pin fan connector for the cpu and a ton of 3 pin case fan connectors. I've read somewhere that the four pin allows the mobo to control the cpu fan speed. All the fans i've found (s-flex, yate loon, etc) are 3-pin. does the fan run at a constant speed?

also, is it possible to automate the speeds of case fans? (slightly faster when the case is hotter, slower at idle, etc)


thanks for any help, my pc is half built. i'm waiting to figure the rest of this out before i buy any more parts. I've got a case, psu, mobo, hdd's, and cpu. that thread is here.

It supports 3-pin fans just fine..just like my IP35-E
 
Variable..depending on your temperature setting.

My 2100rpm Tower 120 fan runs at 600rpm @ idle and is dead silent ... the moment things get heated up its spins up to max rpm.
 
that's interesting... what is the purpose of the fourth pin? again, i haven't even seen fans with these 4-pin connectors.


will the motherboard control the speed of case fans connected to the 3-pin connectors as well?
