we have a single windows 2000 domain with 2 w2k dns servers with forwarders to outside dns server. In a single domain environment is it important to have one of the DNS servers configured as an authoritive dns server? And if so how the other server be configured to use the other DNS server as an authoritive dns server? Is this even possible in a private subnet, or is this only necessary if you have a dns server on a public address server queries to the outside?

a dns server can be authoritative for its own zone... meaning it is the final authority for its own particular subnet or doamain, giving the answer " no that host does not exist here" or " yes that host exists, here is its A record!" You can set one dns server as the one that goes to the net for non local queries, the others will forward requests for which they are non authoritative to the the server you designate, which in turn will forward usually to dns servers on the net(or whatever you designate). In your setup it is possible, but i dont have enough info to tell if necessary.
