im about to set out on building my own small formfactor pc. i basically want to set it up so that i can do the following:

* record shows from my tv
* copy vid files / mp3 files to the hd from cd
* watch dvd movies
* play high quality video files without it being choppy
* rip audio cds to mp3
* burn cds

i want to be able to do all of the stuff with a remote control. it would be cool if you guys could give me some input as to what kind of hardware components i should buy to make this happen (lowest cost while still having enough power to do the tasks above). also is there a way to get windows or linux to boot really quickly upon pushing power (like within 5 to 10 seconds?)

thanks!

Are you considering building your own from scratch, like in a breadbox or your own container then I would recommend a Mini-itx board with a hauppauge 250/350. I am able to do that. If you are going with a sff case like shuttle, QIC, etc... then get one with a AGP Port and a ATI All in Wonder Card.

Check out the second PC in my sig. It's a Win2003 server, that handles file and print...but it's also my HTPC.

i guess another cool feature would be the ability to burn any video file to dvd?

I have a TDK dual format DVD burner in there as well.

can you give me a list of all the software you are using? do you have remote control support?

The AIW cards come with a remote, and all the TV viewing, recording software you need. Then you typically have Nero or a similar burning app that will burn the video to DVD.

do any of the sff motherboards have onboard video that is good enough to watch dvd quality video files or decode dvds without it being choppy?

Yes, they can all view DVDs just fine. And the decoding part really has nothing to do with the video card.

thanks for the info guys, ill check out those links now. anyone else wants to put in their two cents?

i guess the real question is how hard would it be to set it up so that i could do *everything* on the box using solely a remote?

You'l still need a mouse and keyboard for some things. But, the reason I chose the AIW card was the ATI Remote Wonder. It seems to be the most popular remote, which means it has the most third party support.
