Ok, I have been thinking of upgrading my audio for some time now. Currently, I have a Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 sound card and a set of Logitech Z-640s. In terms of replacing my crappy sound card, I was thinking of getting an Audigy2 ZS Gamer (heck, it comes with 5 games and is fairly cheap at $115 on newegg). Or, on the other hand, I could upgrade my speakers to a set of Logitech Z-680s or Logitech Z-5500s. While I can afford to get both at the same time, I would prefer not to as I do not have a job, and thus, I have no easy way of making that money back up quickly. Thus, what would help me more at the time, the card upgrade or the speakers. The only things i use my computer for are gaming, and watching my episodes of Poirot (plus email, internet, etc,etc).
 
I'd say upgrade the speakers ASAP. I can't imagine you'd notice much difference with a new soundcard on the speakers you have now.
 
Oh, there is another path that I did no think of in my first post. I can afford to get an Audigy 2 ZS Gamer and a set of Logitech Z-5300 speakers for what one set of Logitech Z-5500s costs. What have ya'll heard about the Z-5300s and what are your thoughts on this upgrade option?
 
Agreed with NightRaven. Upgrade the speakers, and then the soundcard if you still feel like it.
 
Use 100% of your money on speakers, if you must. Then again, maybe you could put some money into a Roth IRA or real estate. Just don't spend a dime on a soundcard--yours will be fine until you start getting into real speakers.

Amen. 640's are crap.
 
I'm deciding between the 5300e and the 5500. From what I hear they are both excellent speakers. 5500 sound a little better because you pay for more wattage. So it just depends how much you want to spend.

I can afford either but I dont' think i need the ~500w that the 5500 come with =P
