I'm interested in using a nice receiver amplifier combo for my next build... Does anyone know of a high quality receiver w/ 5.1 & amplifier with a small footprint? One that could fit comfortably on a small desk... I guess about the size of a matx motherboard. Thanks for the help.

I found using Google 9,030,000 web pages on 5.1 Recievers..Looks like there are some good ones..

Man that question's stupid
You list how many results show up, saying that's how many products there are

Than you say something witty, like "Looks like there are some good ones"
I'm pretty damn witty

Let's take a listen on how to be productive.

Take a look at Harmon Kardon receivers, even some of the lower end Denons are good. The Yamaha 5940 is also good too. What's your budget?

BTW, it'll be hard to find one that will be the size of an mATX mobo...

Give Onkyo a shot, too. I've compared countless similarly priced receivers and the Onkyos always come out on top. Superb audio quality, huge heatsinks/capacitors.

just my $0.02 :D

Thanks for the replies so far gentlemen. I have searched for quite a while to find a high quality a/v receiver & amplifier that has a small footprint and so far have not broken into anything very promising.

I thought that some of you more learned audiophile types might know of a company or series that I am not privvy to, that meets my requirements - high quality & compact. I am definately a Krell, mark levinson, Marantz type guy, so I'm not worried about price within reason. Simply most of what I've seen of these high end types are simply too large for my needs.

I appreciate the suggestions so far.

i'm no expert, and myself I just use a very old analog kenwood reciever. however, Denon makes very good digital recievers. Consider them.

Not too much equipment has a small footprint, some are smaller/slimmer vertically but the difference in footprint is minimal.

What kind of speakers are you going to be using where the added power/sound quality of a Pre/Pro setup is necessary?

Small unit, very high quality, Linn 5103 with Linn 5125 Amp, might set you back $3-4k used. It's separates, but very high quality.

Look for a Linn Classik Movie reciever, 5.1 with integrated amp, 12" x 12" small.

I have a Linn Wakonda on my small desk with my monitor on top, it's two channel, but I only have Grado325 headphones hooked up for sound.

This is VERY close to what I'm looking for, I've never even heard of Linn. Its a high quality receiver and amplifier and its only 12.6"W x 3.15"H x 12.8"D... Damn near perfect for my needs. But the only problem is that the particular model in the hyperlink isn't made anymore, it was replaced by the newer Linn Classik Movie which has a larger footprint.

good call, my bedroom amp is an Onkyo (the amp that drives my computer sound and only that) [model TX-SR602] and i love it. really easy to set up, tons of inputs, tons of good clean power, and very nice to me overall. paid $250 on ebay awhile back.

my living room amp is a harman/kardon! [model avr635] and it is fairly similar to my Onkyo (with the h/k giving a bit warmer sound IMO) and i would highly recommend any harman/kardon product.

my kitchen amp is a 5.1 Panasonic reciever that came bundled with some Polk Audio satellite speakers. Sound is alright, but the inputs get so confusing sometimes i have no idea what is going on. Just my 2 cents :)

Maybe you could use a used one? Still quality stuff.

I have all Linn setup with Tri-amped Aktiv Linn Ninkas, the sound is second to none.

If you don't mind guinea pigging an inexpensive product from a reputable dealer, you could always try out the Teac AG-L800 5.1 receiver. It's Tripath based and has a small form factor.

Pretty sure J&R would offer you a hassle free return if you didn't like it.

I don't know how you found this, but everything about it looks exactly like what I require. It is on the inexpensive side, but quality doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. I have never dealt with any TEAC products, and am not sure of its audiophile quality. Hmm.. probably nothing a nice preamp couldn't clear up...

Good find, thanks. Now only if Krell or Harmon Kardon made one exactly like this........

NP

Stumbled upon it one day while researching a few other tripath based amplifiers. I really like the look of that lcd remote.

Oh yea, before i forget, JVC has this really neat low profile upconverting 7.1 receiver with wireless usb input ;)
