Audio Question

Ok, I want to get an Reciever/Speaker System for my PC or Home.. What are the best combo's out there... i have around 500-750 to spend on the hole set, must have a subwoofer also.

Depends on what you want to do. If you are looking at getting separate components, then try to buy an ave reciever, like sony or pioneer, and buy JBL or Bose bookshelf speakers.

Also home theater kits that you can find in Best Buy or Fry's could work out as well. What I did was buy an Onkyo reciever for $1000 bucks and paired it with some Bose bookshelf speakers @ $250. Hope this helps

If you can expand your budget by a little bit, you should get the AVR-883. It has component video switching, and multi-room capability.

What you did was stupid. If your budget allocations were directly opposite that, you would have much better sound.

and please do not suggest bose.

they may have a name for them selfs, however they dont deserve it at all, personaly i found the sound dull lack in any up top sparkle or any taught bass. You are much better going out and hunting for a hi-fi store near you and asking them to give you a hand choosing, and at the end of it ask what they can do price wise, normaly they'll throw in the speaker cable or some stands or somthing or knock a chunk of money off. all in all a FAR better deal than any bose stuff can ever aspire to be.

personaly an AV reciver by yamaha coupled with some monitor audio speakers, should suit you budget.

but im keeping suggestions vauge just because going to an AV store is soooo much better than buying online. just my 2 cents.

There was a time when I might have agreed with you. Then I heard a pair of Ascend CBM-170 monitors. Then I looked at their price tag. The supply-chain and retail markup involved in the hi-fi speaker is shocking. Today, the smart dollar for price/performance goes to the internet direct speaker manufacturers. Ascend and AV123 should be on your short list. I pointed out the AV123 ELT set becuase you were interested in a Sub/sat combo and amplification all under $750

If the money is a bit looser and your asthetics are a bit more forgiving, you could just as well go with a CBM-170 pair and a Hsu STF-2. I've not heard the STF-2, but I have heard the VTF-2, and the STF is supposed to be roughly the same design, without the variable tuning (VT) port design that lets you trad off extension for output. The STF is tuned only for maximum extension.

If you want, you can try to find an owner in your area that will let you listen to thier speakers.

I'd agree with GMC completely. I just placed an order for another 500$ worth of gear from AV123, unheard, but I'm completely confident that what I'll get will be great. So far, I've ordered my Ref 1's and 2's from them, and they are incredible speakers. I plan on getting their 7.1 pre-pro/amp combo later this year also. Also, I've purchased an SVS PB12-Plus/12 from www.svsubwoofers.com , and it is a tremendous product. I doubt you could find its equal in a B&M for less than 3000$.


Check out the forums at www.av123.com , www.hometheaterforum.com , and others. Many people buy these products unheard, and I've hardly seen anyone who is disappointed.

PS: I also used audioenvy to listen to a different set of AV123 speakers, the Rocket line, and it was a great experience. I sat around with another audio enthusiast, drank a sixpack, and listened to music and watched movies for an hour =]
