Audio problem with optical drive?

I recently did a new build with an ASUS P8Z68-V LX and 2500K. Up until today I had only ever used the optical drive to install the OS and other software. There were no issues with the drive doing this.

Today, I was going to start ripping my CD collection, and the audio was garbling and stuttering with the first CD. Thinking it was the disk, I switched to another, but still had the same problem. I switched to another identical optical drive, and had the same problem. Then I switched the SATA cable. Same problem. Switched to different SATA ports on the motherboard. Same problem.

The next step was to remove the ASUS Xonar DG sound card, and try the on board audio. Still the same problem.

I can stream audio from the Internet with no problems, and play music through Foobar or iTunes with no problems.

Is this a motherboard issue? Am I missing any troubleshooting steps with the current hardware?

What program are you using to rip the cd's? have you tried a different brand/model of cd/dvd drive?
Also what format are you trying to rip your cd's to?
if you are using windows media player, try setting the optical drive to turn on error correction..
you can find this setting under the windows media player's tools menu, then options, and select the devices tab, double-click on your optical drive in the devices tab and check "Use Error Correction" under the Rip options..
then try again.. if this doesn't work, try using a different cd ripping program.. there is an open-source program called CDex that you can try.. just to make sure it is actually the optical drive causing this.. you can download it from http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/ please post your results and that will rule out some issues it could be, then i may be able to help you further.. I never got to attempting to rip. When I inserted the disk it went to auto-play through WMP, and that is when I noticed the sound problem. Tried another CD, and the same thing.

I'm going to pull an older model Samsung drive from another machine and try it as well.

I assume you've tried a different program for playback? At any rate Exact Audio Copy is what you should be using for the best rips and you can find some good, albeit slightly outdated for some things, guides for setting it up and ripping it here.

If it did this when it was just playing through WMP.. it does sound like a bad, or incompatible drive. or it may even be a dirty laser lens in the optical drive.
try a dvd drive cleaning disc.. if that doesn't correct the issue, then you just may have an incompatible optical drive for your motherboard..
also check the optical drive's manufacturer's site for any firmware updates for the optical drive, this may also correct the issue.

I tried playing a CD with something other than WMP, and it did the same thing with iTunes, but then did not when using Foobar.

Both optical drives that I tested had the latest firmware. Each encountered the same problem, and both are pretty much new. In fact, for the second drive it was the first time being used.

I checked to make sure that the version of WMP was the latest, and it was. Same with iTunes. I checked Foobar, and there was an update. I installed that, and voila, the problem disappeared.

Ironic, since Foobar was the only one of the three that initially played the CD okay without the garbling. Strange. Well, I guess I can get to ripping!
