I am trying to find a small, simple to use alternative to Wimamp 2.x.

I need something that has the same kind of simple keyboard control scheme (not like WMP and it's ctrl+something)

Wimamp 2.x for some reason makes music sound like ass through my receiver and as above WMP pisses me off with the keyboard shortcuts. Wimamp 2 is so small and simplistic that its perfect except for this issue. I know there used to be plugins for it but they are long gone. Unless some one knows another way I can get it working well with my receiver. Everything plays wonderfully with it. and Unlike other programs winamp only plays through the left and right speakers where as with WMP all 5 will at least have sound and the bass is more pronounced. The bass with winamp is really washed out sounding.

Try the free ones and see which you like.
Media monkey, songbird, vlc media player, foobar 2000.
I am using foobar and it works for me. Tried media monkey a couple years ago and did not like the fact that it renamed all my mp3's to some media monkey file name, no idea if it still does that.

your sig shows an X-Fi, which means you've got a piece of Creative hardware installed, so you can try Creative's MediaSource application (I use it, don't see myself switching any time soon)

otherwise foobar2000 is fairly light, so is VLC (I like VLC over foobar mostly because of everything else it can do, and familiarity)

As for playing music through all 5 speakers; I find stereo to be preferable. I've used just all of the media players mentioned here, and Winamp easily sounds as good IMO. You sure that the EQ is flat on both Winamp and WMP when doing this comparison?

Maybe consider switching to a later version (I'd recommend skipping v3 and getting one of the earlier versions of Winamp 5 that weren't bundled with all of the unnecessary crap).

I used to use a couple of the plugins you mentioned, though...they should still be out there somewhere but Winamp's vanilla sound should be comparable to other apps.

You could also try Quintissential Player; I like the older 4.51 version better as it's more lightweight but it's another good alternative.

You can still download the latest version of Winamp Lite, which doesn't have all the crap included. All you have to do is refuse the additional crapware during the EULA,and you have a crap-free music player.

http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp557_lite_en-us.exe

They just hide the link to the LITE player on their download page, so you'll download the crapware version.

You should be quite satisfied with the sound quality, and it can be used in exactly the same way as your old Winamp 2x player.

Have you tried the DFX plugin for winamp? I've had pretty good experience with that in the past, being able to make my music sound much better.

(note: I haven't tried it in a few years (moved to mac primarily) so I can't say if it's as good as it used to be.)

I've recently started using KMPlayer on Win7 and notice a slight improvement over Winamp, but not enough improvement to switch if you really like Winamp (but it might be worth a try for you).

Foobar2000 is the way to go. Use ASIO or WASAPI (if vista or win7). google it. It does a difference.

This is truly the best audio player out there and it's extremely simple. It also handle large library with ease.

i never understood the rave over foobar. simple, it is... its like a 'linux player'. i think there are many better options, my favorite being jrmediajukebox.

It does look simple and unrefined, but that is just the surface. The technical refinements and endless expansion possibilities are making it a geat choice. you can customize it too.

The point of an audio player program isn't to look pretty. Foobar gets the job done with minimal fuss and maximal utility.

And there's something to be said for a minimalistic interface.
