basically i'm a college kid looking to setup a little home theater in my dorm room. right now i have an old sony tv with one set of a/v inputs, an xbox, and a gamecube and i have my pc pretty nearby. anyways i'm setting aside around $400 for a decent receiver/5.1 speaker setup and i have an audigy 2 on its way. and i just wanted to know if i could get everything from my tv to my consoles to my pc to be able to utilize the speakers. oh and what are some good options for a receiver and speakers with my price range?
 
Onkyo Home Theater In a Box (HTIB). Make sure it has 5.1 RCA inputs for hooking up your soundcard, you'll need some cables for this (1/8" to RCA); should have all other necessary connections for the game systems/TV. You may need another adaptor for the Xbox, I know the PS2 has the optical out on the back. I'm personally doing something like this with a Kenwood set I found on sale (but for a home theater PC).
 
Umm.. HTIB, sure! Onkyo? I might be out of it, but aren't they kinda bargain basement? I might be a total dipshit, as well :-p
 
I would tend to stay away from a HTIB. They are generally offer little bang/buck. Try to go used if you can. Look in classifieds for a surround receiver with 5.1 analog inputs. You should be able to find one for <$100. Then go to AV123.com and get the Rocket Tykes 5.1 Home Theater package for $399.

Yeah, good call. I haven't been shopping for stereo stuff for awhile now; I'm rusty! Yeah, back when I was looking for a stereo for my compy, I decided to get an actual receiver and 2.1 speakers, so I could upgrade in the future, but start out with stuff I could keep, vs. stuff I would have to upgrade in the recent future (yes, I said recent future)!
 
$400 is bargain basement, at that level things are going to sound really similar. However, you might check out this bundle if you can swing an extra $100. I've heard good things in multiple audio forums about those Rocket Tykes, not to mention they look pretty sweet in their brushed aluminum enclosures. The real kicker on this deal is getting that newer kenwood amp for $100 granted it is worth ~$280. Those speakers and the 500w amp should be more than enough for a dorm or small living room.
