Audio Idea...Comments?

Here's the situation:
my sound card output is plugged into a splitter, one goes to my audio reciever, the other to my headphones.

Here's the problem:
the reciever likes a hot signal, when i'm using it i turn up my sound card all the way and adjust the volume with the reciever remote, but when using my headphones i turn my soundcard down to about 1/3. when someone goes to bed, i mute my reciever and continue gaming/rocking out with my headphones, after turning down the volume on my sound card...the problem is the volume control (on the keyboard) has an on screen display which causes games to glitch for a moment. I could just deal with it and....*Gasp*...pause my game while i turn down the volume...but it would be way more fun to use this as an excuse for a MOD!!!

THE (proposed) SOLUTION:
use my 2 empty 5.25" bays to add a front headphone jack, volume control...and...VU METERS! Here's the idea:

The first VU Meter shows the volume before the fader, the second shows the volume after the fader...simple enough idea...now how the hell am i going to do this?
 
i know i've seen scemetics online for making a vu meter, but i can't remember where. as for hooking them up, you should be able to have one connect to the audio signal before the fader, and one after it.

thanks for the link, but i found a site that sells stereo 10 led vu meters for $23, well worth not having to build one...can't remember the url now...i'll post it if i remember...

i like building electronic circuits. in fact, i'm thinking of building that for my computer
 
There's one other option for you. Instead of doing everything all complicated, why don't you mod the splitter? On the side going to the receiver, don't do anything. On the headphone side, put in a couple of resistors (one for each L/R) to reduce the volume. Then you never have to adjust the volume at all--you'll have your max volume going to your receiver, and your reduced volume going to your headphones.
 
that would work fine....but it wouldn't look cool...if i did everything the easy/simple way, i wouldn't have the reciever in the first place, i'd just have some crappy computer speakers...but thanks for the idea, although i like the idea of being able to adjust the headphone volume without resorting to changing the sound card volume, which is where the rheostat comes in...
