Actually it's ATAPI busThe IDE bus is a little different. The cable was originally used for CD audio ('Redbook' audio) to a soundcard or motherboard. It's not needed for playing from the drive's headphone jack; the drive has DAC circuitry for that purpose. Luckily, the industry has done away with this cable, which added clutter and picked up too much electronic noise from inside the computer anyways.

The real reason you don't want to use it is because it uses the DAC in your cd-rom drive (very cheap-as-in-quality) vs the DAC on your soundcard (not as cheap).. the sound quality is much better using the DAC on your soundcard.
