heh.. I'm trying to find something that connects into the surround sound audio ports from my computer (including microphone and everything) that allows me to switch between my headphones/mic and the speakers. I know you can use your front audio ports but I'm looking for more of a set top box kind of thing. Anyone have any ideas or anything?

Radio shack....they have av switch boxes that work well...but you would need to get adaptors to make them work with 1/8"

Yeah, I saw radioshack has some stuff like that. They have something a bit different but it's not quite surround. If I can't find one with built in 1/8" jacks, I might have to go that way. Anyone else know of any other switches?

Well, you'll still have to change ports around in software on your computer.

Why not get a half-decent sound card for recording purposes? There are no integrated chipsets with good audio-in capability, as far as I know. As for headphone jacks, don't your speakers have one on their control panel?

Hmm. Maybe he's not doing recording. Maybe his mic input is good enough.
Well, then he would still have to switch the ports around in the Volume Control (I'm assuming he's using one of the integrated solutions with multi-purpose jacks) every time he tries to switch off.

A cheap second sound card would do the job better, either way he looks at it.

As for doing a DIY anyway, all you should need are a bunch of toggle switches, some soldering skills, and willingness to cut open those tiny-ass cables. (I wish they weren't so thin, but oh well)

Any reason you don't want to use a splitter?
Headphones don't always have their own volume controls (easy/likely fix: just unplug them), and more importantly, splitters can do weird things to signal quality and they ALWAYS add noise.

Of course, if you're not picky about audio, then they'll do the job just fine. :)

building one yourself is also an option....if YOU don't want to build it, PM me, maybe I can build one for you (I'm X86dude's padawan learner)!
