Hello all,

I currently have an old audigy 1.
Should I get an Audigy 2 or an X-FI?
I listen to games etc. through headphones and a good pair of kef speakers.
I also listen to music.
Is there a vast difference between audigy 2 and x-fi, in
fps in games
sound quality in games
sound quality in music.

The x-fi that I was looking at was the low end extreme music.(£99)
However still twice the price of an audigy 2 zs (£40)

any ideas?

Honestly, if I were you I would invest in the X-Fi. It is the newest technology and will be supported for some time to come. The card is superior in every way to an Audigy1. I switched from an Audigy 4 Pro to the X-fi and everything sounds better.
 
but is that a £50 difference between the zs and xfi?
is it worth that much?
is there an increase in fps in games?

Not really an increase in FPS, but there is an increase in sound "quality". There are many metrics for quality though. For one thing, the 44.1->48 resampling is better so music should improve the quality of music playback. When it comes to gaming with headphones, the CMSS3D headphone mode on the X-Fi is much improved over the Audigy 2.
 
the x-fi isn't really about making stuff sound better or faster, its about implementing better technology so we have better virtual surround/better headphone positioning. the only thing that would sound "better" is music w/ the crystalizer. however, some members on this forum feel that it is gimmicky. and yeah i'll agree its gimmicky, but it works
 
Easy choice. X-Fi by far. Creative Labs doesn't support older cards worth a crap. I'd get the newest thing and be current for awhile. If you don't get into the ones with the drive bay addon they aren't exactly expensive.
 
X-Fi, i dont have one yet, but i am planning on getting one soon, like around chrismas, might be on sale then, os i will just have to live with my old Realtek'97 onboard for a little bit longer, and the X-Fi might go on sale then too! :p :D
 
so does the headphone mode of the xfi work really well in providing positional audio in a quasi 3d effect?
how would you set this up also?

I won't buy X-Fi earlier, I'll wait for next X-Fi card.
What I expect in the future is that the X-Fi processor will be utilized in the future sound cards, it might be a new features or technology is still not exist in the current X-Fi brands.
I don't want buy X-Fi now and after a small period of time I upgrade to newer version,
like the release of Audigy2 with 6.1 support after a period of months creative released Audigy2 zs with extra feature over Audigy2. :eek:
 
I think that I will go with the zs, as I just can't really justify spending that much on a sound card, however lilke soundblaster said, I think that the next one could be amazing.

perhaps a combined gpu, spu and ppu all in one huge board?

Would you use a V-6 in your Mustang if you could have a V-8???? (ok, corvette or whatever.....) The X-Fi is just plain better. Hands down.period.available now. Your gonna grow old waiting for the next best thing. X-Fi sound is AWESOME. I'm listening to some old Robbie Robertson right now and I have to admit....the Crystalizer make it sound BETTER than what I hear on my B&W loudspeakers.....GET ONE,dude.

Truer 3D games sound better than enhanced 2D Games with CMSS-3D for. I like this line from that same review.
