Well, all I want to be able to do is listen to my mp3 collection (or CD's for that matter) with a decent level of sound quality, and a fair bit of volume.

Now with my Logitech Z-5300, they pack a fair punch! And my SB Audigy 2 is meant to be pretty good as well...

HOWEVER, the one thing that pisses me off is that when playing mp3's through winamp(/media player/etc...) only the left and right speaker are in use. So quality is ACE, but loudness... well I have 3 speakers that im not using!!!!

So then I try Creative's answer..... CMSS, which doesn't do a bad job, BUT completely messes up the songs equalizer settings, the bass becomes WAY to loud, and with CMSS 1 the rear speakers are too quiet. (CMSS 2 the bass is unbearable).

Next up is the "matrix" button on the logitech speakers.... Which produces a center channel to be proud of! However, the rear speakers are so quiet they might just as well be off. so 3 out of 5... Getting there..

What I want to know is if anyone knows of a way to get a "Stereo x2" mode, where the rear two simply copy the front two... Then i'd have 4 ot of 5.... Which for Stereo is about as close as you can get without distortion, so i'll be happy then!

check out winamp for some drivers for surround sound or multi speakers. in order for my 560s to work i needed to do this
 
The newest version of winamp gave me all kinds of trouble with my 4.1 speaker setup. I shouldn't have to troubleshoot a freaking mp3 player for audio problems because some ass-hat programmer did not include everything that I need to run it properly on my pc "out of the box".

IMO winamp has been going downhill with every new release.

I got rid of it and now use only windows media player (for now).
 
First off, how do you have your speakers connected? I'm not familiar with those speakers, so I don't know if they take digital as well as analog. I'm assuming you have them hooked up via analog, and are using all three miniplugs.

There should be some stereo x 2 plugins for winamp, if it doesn't support that out of the box.

Global, there's no way for you equalize the bass back out, by using the winamp EQ? Also, you should be able to balance the speaker level via the card's drivers.

Otherwise, foobar2000 supports stereo x2 and surround, right outta the box =]
 
I can do it by changing the EQ but I hate having to change it when I go back and forth between the two...
 
Did you check out that link? It had links in it to at least 2 plugins that would work [based on what I saw, I don't have 5.1 so I couldn't tell you]

EDIT: And I'm at work right now, and I wouldn't install winamp at home even if I did have 5.1 =]
 
I did and the plugins I have bookmarked.... Im trying out my onboard NV-Soundstrom instead to see if it makes any difference... It's quite similar really....
 
It seems as though because you add an extra input along the rear channels, and the bass is generated NOT passed through the bass output.... It has an effect of "doubling" the bass' volume as it tries to compensate... Which wouldn't happen of course if there was a bass output... But I dont really fancy trying to find something which does that!!!
