audigy 2 and speakers

I currently have an Audigy 2 with Logitech Z560 speakers ( meant to be 4.1 but I'm only using 2 satellites ).

When I'm changing the volume knob from my speakers, I get ear-hurting popping or cracking sounds from my right speaker. It happens all the time when I change the volume. I don't remember when it first happened but this never occurred when my computer set-up was new.

Any suggestions on what I should try?

And is it worth upgrading my sound card? I want something better in D3D and music playback performace.

Sounds like you have a dirty Volume pot. If this is the case just put the speaker to the volume you like and use the software volume control for volume control. The pot is just wearing out bythe sound of whats happening. So short of chaning the pot this is your only option.
POT=Potentiometer. it's the device that controls the volume under the knob.
