Would you choose an ATX or BTX case, as of right now?

Which seems to be the best option these days?

NOTE: I didn't post this in the 'Case Modding' forum because, well, it isn't really modding the actual case. Just some 'General Hardware' topic :D

i bought an ATX Lian Li PC-60 3 weeks ago so i'll say ATX. I would have liked a ATX/BTX like the stacker, but you just don't find something like that in a good mid-tower.

ATX, I haven't really seen an amd built pc needing the motherboard mounted differently. Maybe an atx/btx combo if I was positive the market was going to btx.

I'll be very surprised if we ever see significant numbers of BTX mainboards for sale through retail channels.

It'll be much like with WTX, where only OEMs use the formfactor for a while.

BTX, upside-down ATX. Fuck it.
These ass-clowns need to invent a processor that doesn't need to distipate more heat than a 6 cylinder engine. It's getting ridiculous. Pretty soon you'll have to phase change cool the damned things just to run notepad.

i just got me a fake btx case its a silverstone windtunnel case, it is badassideness the qualty of contruction is great i could use it to drive me jeep up on to make it higher thats how sturdy it is, that being said i did hafta modify the 120mm fan to fit the wind tunnel and the dfi board doesn't push the socket down far enough so you gota cut a hole in the windtunnel plastic but thats cool still does a great job

i actually have to agree.

So fucking true it isn't even funny, its sad.

Get a Coolermaster Stacker 2. It does ATX and BTX.

But yeah, Intel definatly needs to learn how to make a chip that doesn't need to create a new motherboard and case standard just to stay barely under the temperature limit at stock speeds.

Correct me if im wrong but when all the case's say BTX all it is is mounting the tray upside down correct?

I like the BTX. I dont really know, I just like having the Mobo upside down. Probably because cooling is better, also because now you can actually see your video card, and all the coolness.

I want a V2000 so bad, even if it isnt BTX compatible, just having al that space, and the mobo tray upside down is cool.

A lot of us may want to see BTX as it's new and unique. But let's face facts; it was just designed by Intel and they wanted to force it on the market, as it would allow the Prescott to bake a little bit less in your case. That's just poor engineering to cover the ass of poor engineering, and not something I want to see made an industry standard!

Let's just stick with ATX for a while, and use CPUs that don't cook hashbrowns at idle, like the Athlon 64. :D

I like having new things. Theres really nothing bad about BTX, if they came out with a BTX AMD Mobo, I would get it. Who really cares if Intel made it just because there CPUs are hot? It's not like AMD CPUs ar Icy cool. It really doesnt matter. Do you think AMD created the ATX for factor? Its not that big of a deal. If getting a few degrees lower on my CPU mean (Ghasp!) Flipping my board upside down I wouldnt mind.

120F with stock cooling on a prescott overclocked 700mhz is baking?

That's pretty exceptional and I'd have to wonder about the accuracy of your temperature sensor, frankly, with a CPU emitting over 100 watts of heat. Of course, this doesn't go as much for lower-clocked Prescotts. The models over 3.4 GHz, however, are very prone to encountering heat problems and BTX was Intel's final hope to scale Prescott to 5.0 GHz as they planned, before they "hit the thermal wall" according to their engineers and canned the idea. Why do you think the CPU is the first thing hit by intake air in BTX? The CPU is experiencing a severe NEED for cool air, due to the absurd TDP of the latest reamings of the Netburst architecture.

I don't usually advocate Tom's Hardware, but this test says a lot about high-clocked P4's.

It's the mark of bad design covering the ass of bad design. It's not a good practice. Intel should develop a core like the Pentium-M Dothan and adapt it to the desktop platform to stop the heat problem, and stop overclocking their CPUs at the factory and the marking up their prices. That said, the non-FX Athlon 64s do run below 50 watts TDP most of the time, so they do run pretty cool. :)

Nearly, there's a few design changes that put the expansion cards at the top of the tower and allowing for ventilation, but thats about it.

Personally, I don't see any reason to go for BTX yet, no manufacturer has seriously put up components to fit it. Its just something Intel made up to try and make more money (as has been established before), there's no real need to embrace it before its even become recognised as a standard yet. It requires a pretty dramatic change in the design of all components, and thats why no ones really taken it seriously as yet.

BTX has better air flowage...

False. The only component in a BTX-based system which is cooled better than in an ATX-based one is the CPU, all other components are cooled equally well or worse.

I do like having an ATX with the mobo flipped but thats not really "BTX-like" considering that BTX moves the PCIe slots to the other side of the mobo and places IDE and power connectors right in the middle of the fucking board. BTX is nothing more then Intel covering their ass because of the shitty Prescott. And no it does not have better cooling but it does limit you to single slot video cards.

Seconded. The airflow in BTX is made to focus on cooling a Prescott, so devices like the video card, RAM, chipset(s), are all hit by HOT air on the jet stream's way through the case.
