I got a job! :D

That's right, I now have my first shot at long-term corporate sponsorship! I graduate from school in May and have a job lined up for the Monday afterward!

And the best part? I included Folding@Home on my resume and they were impressed by it!

What does this have to do with the [H]orde?

It means that I will be able to successfully keep all the hardware I purchase, ensuring even and constant PPD.
It means that I will be able to slowly build up an awesome (yet cost effective) farm and no longer need to turn on the heater in winter.
It also means that I will be able to move into a proper apartment (hopefully with electric paid).
It means that I will have more sexy hardware pr0n pictures, and will subsequently kick back some of my hardware that is to be upgraded at a fair DC discount in the next coming months.

Here's a toast to PPD and employment. May all of those who are struggling with this subject have the best of luck.

Regards,

Congrats man, I'm nearing 2 years out of grad school myself and vividly remember the frustration and uncertainty before I secured the post graduation job.

Also very cool they liked the F@H, may I ask what industry?

[H]orde helped you get a job!

You must of left some things out ;)

Congrats man!

A big congratz! Great to see your hard work and sacrifice pay off.

Good deal man, can't wait for the new pr0n to start rolling in.

Jobs are a good thing. You are still a little young for the second half of that conversation but to sum it up retirement might just be a better thing. I don't know for sure.

Congrats and being payed to be employed beats the hell out of being broke and living with your parents (or whoever).

It isn't easy these days either.

As long as it wasn't because they thought you were one of the scientists on the project (I'm assuming you're not)

Congrats man! What in the world did you write about folding@home?

They didn't think I was "a scientist", I just said that I participated in the project and got my local computer club involved. I also explained the general theory behind it.

My major is Computer Information Systems: Networking, if it helps.

It's hard to know what direction to take as far as residence goes... I want to save up enough money to buy a starter home, but don't want to freeload off of my current benefactor much longer. I don't live with my parents, as they moved out of town a while back.

I promise I'll be conservative with my paychecks; I have a small amount of debt to pay off (about one paycheck's worth at this new job), and that will be taken care of first. I will *attempt* to avoid the urge to upgrade all my hardware right away, and will try to put about half into savings each paycheck for the first several months. I don't have a lot of money saved at the moment because of school, my expensive [H] hobby, etc, so it will be nice to get that tucked away.

I know it's important to contribute to retirement, and a certain percentage is contributed by default.

I won't get into specifics, but 3% of each check is put into the 401K program by default, with the option of contributing up to 6% and having 66% of that matched by the company.

usually what i did with my paychecks was set aside 100 dollars per paycheck(was making 400 a week).. so that 100 dollars went to my computer funds and the rest went to savings and bills.. worked out pretty well for me since all the money i saved ended up funding my move to el washington'o..

Make sure that you are putting in whatever 401k donations will be matched- there is no investment that pays off like that. (IMHO~)

I thought I posted already.... anyhow congrats.....

Well, after celebrating with the woman over some slow-smoked barbecue, I did the math on what my take-home pay will be after taxes, insurance premiums, and the like, and it's a bit more modest than my initial ballpark guess (yay new tax bracket!). Anyway, thanks to everyone here who's congratulated me on this achievement, and I'm busy formulating a modest upgrade budget that I can spend on DC gear each month. I'll be sure to do the maximum matched contribution to my 401K. Thanks DWolvin.

'gratz... on the job-hunt stage of things myself, know it's not much fun =P
hope you find a satisfactory apartment
