Do any manufactures have a pre-built/ready to order Intel Atom system with Raid? I have a client that will have very little needs at the small offices. About 10 computers, only need is DC and Word Documents File Sharing. Figured a cheap Atom machine with Raid 1 would be nice. Any company pre built one?

SuperMicro has some boards based on Atom + ICH9 with 6 SATA/300 ports. Not sure if those can do (onboard) RAID though. I assume this is for Windows platform?

I have not seen one with raid, But you can get a few that come with WHS.

If you're looking for a pre-built you should check this out. It's not Atom, but it should fit your needs - HP Microserver. I love mine.

Won't need WHS, will need to run Server 2008 on it. Not a big fan of AMD. Supermicro with the Onboard could be okay. May just go with a Intel i3 from a Dell T110 with the SAS. Will be a bit more but should be a better machine.

Dell is funny how your enter their site - go in as small business - server - deals and you get the Xeon X3430 (4 core 4 thread) for the same price as the i3

Here's a link

330 for 2Gb ram / 250Gb HD / X3430.

Just add your own hard drives (it has 1 eSata port and 4 open HD slots). Crucial has the appropriate ECC memory for pretty cheap as well if you want more.

If you have the room for it (i.e. don't need a tiny box) it's hard to beat 330 bucks for that.

+1 to the t110 from dell. Mine is coming friday, I am going to put 8gb more ram in it and make it an ESXi server.

Its a STEAL for 330. Retail the cpu that comes with it is 209ish

How loud is the T110? I'm really tempted to make a small NAS and transcoder out of it, but I don't have anywhere to store it so it'll be in the living room corner. Also, anyone know about the raid/perc options? Do I want the add in's or not if I want to do raid 5?

The reason I would go with something like this over the Atom server is that 2008 R2 on an Atom is less than ideal.

The T110 has thermal control - when it's low it's not that loud - think an average apartment refridgerator compressor sound. It's quieter than my Optomo 71 projector for instance. But when it kicks on it gets a little mini wind-tunnel going (probably 40-45dBA). I'm planning on replacing mine - it's a 92x92x32mm fan, and you need a dell 5 pin <-> 4 pin converter. I think it will be pretty quiet with a better fan.

For raid 5 you just need to compare the price for those vs. an aftermarket raid card - I think the H700/H800 are the two options that offer raid-5, but I really dont' know much about them. I have a perc H200 I use as a HBA for ZFS (so no raid card needed). You can add in aftermarket cards as well if you want. I'm going to guess it's going to be cheaper buying the stuff aftermarket instead of from dell though.

When you get memory just look for T110 memory from crucial (or make sure you get Unbuffered ECC memory - 16Gb (4x 4Gb chips) was ~250 from crucial I think.

You can also consider another 90 to upgrade to a X3440 - this is basically teh 3430 with hyperthreading (like a i7-8xx).

The only real potential gotcha is based on how many hard drives you want. If you are going 3.5" drives you can get a 3 in 2 for the 2 5.25 bays for 8 hard drives total internal. That would require another card, as there are only 6 SATA slots available (1 external eSata). And it's designed for 4 internal hard drives, 1 Optical, and 1 eSata. If you need more drives than one fo those configurations you need to either go to a 4 in 1 (4 2.5" drives in 1 5.25 bay) or go to an external enclosure. Not a big deal (I went with an external enclosure), but just something to be aware of.

That's a great deal, it's just too bad that the 250GB HDD can't be removed from the cost, no 250GB drive is worth $99. ;)

Otherwise, good find!

SUPERMICRO SYS-5015A-PHF 1U Barebone Server Intel Atom D510 processor (RAID 0/1) it also seems to have IMPI

Comes out to about $513 bucks on newegg, so if you want more power instead of small, quiet, etc. Then don't get this. :)

I have a preferred 1U atom server build that I rather like for pfsense. My build cost about $500 and uses an Atom D525 cpu. It also uses a chassis with a backwards design, perfect for mounting on the rear side of a rack, beside a switch.

If you're interested, I can make a public wishlist on Newegg or Amazon which contains the components I suggest.
