ATI's SLI brand to be called Multi Rendering

I see all these posts about how ATi is hypocritical about SLI. Yet I have not seen one of NV on the same subject. When 3DFX had SLI, NV attacked 3DFX accusing them of producing inferior video cards, and thus needed two, to compete. Now the shoe is on another foot, and NV is the "creator" and ATi is the copier. ATi has done something similar before, with Maxx. CPU's are going to two cores, I guess they are copying ATi with Maxx technology? Please. "Copying" happens in every field of technology, and every market of buisness.

Round and round we go. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

the thing was 3dfx DID make inferior products. and had to have 2 vid cards to compete.

when i had a TnT and a TnT2 Ultra no one i knew who had a 3dfx card could even touch me. even with there SLI they couldn't do anything.

u are all immature, and u should take this seriously considering how old i am.....cough*15*cough

Yeah... ATI is stupid for naming their SLI system based on what it acutaly does.

I think something simple like "X2 Technology" to describe their version of SLI would be fine. SLI isn't all that great of a name anyway so I don't know why people are laughing a Multi-Rendering, both names suck.

haha he's got a point!

but what's the big deal about? so what if ATI is now doing what nvidia is going for? that's like saying that Chevy can't make v8's because ford did it first.

You claim you're married? They must have lowered the legal age requirement in your state to 10 years old judging by your infantile posts. Or maybe you're a 30 year old with the menality of a 10 year old? Either way my condolences to your wife.

Good point...I mean...what is more confusing to the layperson?

"Scan Line Interleaving"

or

"Multi-rendering"?

I kind of like the idea of reusing the MAXX label. "ATI Radeon X800 MAXX" does have a rather nice ring to it, don't you think?

In any event, this sort of technology is made for the enthusiast, and it does not matter what it's called. They could call it gummiberry-juice-tech and we'd still buy it.

LOL another satisfied customer.

On a side note: SLI was very original of NV

more like 3dfx but i'll late that slide ;)

ya know, this new semi-battle of ati/nvidia reminds me of the penny-arcade comic today just replace certain words with "ATI" or "nvidia" and it's all so true.

not too interested in the name, its the performance that mainly interests me.

yes i am married at the age of 24

but so what if i can have a little fun bullshiting around.

i mean is it hurting anyone here? does it really bother you that much that i can act a little off my rocker sometimes?

i mean come on. who cares. but as it seems you do.

oh well. this is a thread about ati and there say on there SLI.. not a thread about my life and how i post on the [H]ardforums

I don't see why some people have the urge to whip out there "e-penis" for anything concerning ATI and Nvidia. MR sounds funny and stupid but that's not the point, the point is that ATi tried to say that SLI was mostly useless and pure marketing and now they're working on their own SLI technology.

Pulling a "Kerry" like that is what I find funny. :D

I see some people starting with the flames, yeah that really helps your "argument".

For all I care they could have called it "Super fun-fun love machine, go!" and if the performance was great I'd buy four (if I could). :D

This just stinks of "knee-jerk reaction" though.

Ummm... can someone post a quote of an ATI rep saying SLi is "useless?" I think you all are confusing what people on forums say as the official word of ATI.

As far the name, I agree with those that say the name doesn't matter. When the benchmarks come in, all that matters is which product performs better. I you buy a product based on its name, well... you deserve what you got.

Look yourself, there was a rep that a while back that was talking down SLI. The same reasons stated in that mini interview would also apply to their own SLI like tech. (Different version Bios screwing up, anyone else remember that?) And I didn't present is as a direct quote so don't treat it as such.

Well, if you're too lazy, I am too. :D

All I can remember is an ATI rep saying that the gains from SLi were impressive, but that they didn't think there was much of a market for it.

You retards need to get a life.

P.S

Since this will probably be my last post, I'll close by saying:

GO FUCK YOURSELVES!!!

I agree with this guy.

Well to be precise they already had this "multi render" technology a long time ago since its used by evans and sutherland. They obviously were down playing its importance in the consumer market but now that they see investors are demanding an answer to SLI, they have no choice but to make a consumer version to appease them.

Yeah I'm prety sure they had it too, like how Apple has a copy of OS X for X86. ;)

I'm sure this wasn't really meant to see the light of day either, probably hoping that performance gains from SLI were marginal.
One of the selling points of SLI is for mainstream performance, buy a 6600GT now and in seven months be able to "upgade" by adding another 6600GT for a 75-80% performance boost.... the problem is that motherboards will SLI will start close to $200 and then trickle down into the $120 market, I still think thats cost prohibative for the "mainstream" other then the gamers.

I found this on gaming nexus:

While on the phone with ATI, I asked Public Relations Manager, Patricia Mikula, about NVIDIA’s SLI solution. She had reservations on NVIDIA’s take citing the problems that can arise if the board revisions or BIOSes are different. Would a card bought today work with a card bought three months later? And if it’s a mainstream solution, would a mainstream customer be able to troubleshoot the problems that can appear?

What about boards that are from different manufactures? Would they work correctly in SLI mode? Patricia also has reservations in the fact that the video cards are much more complicated today than they were when the 3DFx cards were out supporting SLI. She also stated that by the time you purchase the two cards and the expensive motherboards needed along with a high end power supply, you’d probably be better off spending the money on a single high-end card.

I think the bios questions and concerns about different cards not working together are valid. As far as point about one high end card being more cost effective than two mid range cards, I think the results point to the fact that 2 6600 GT's are not better than 1 6800 GT.

I don't think asking a few thoughtful questions is "talking SLi down."

I wonder why ATI didn't just get the tech from nVidia in the first place. Like Intel and AMD, they have to share processor code (to a point) so that the processors are compatible with all software.

I personally have owned a few ATI cards and don't care for them much, but I think in some cases they should share a "feature". Makes things easier on the motherboard manufactures. Are we going to see motherboards that only work with SLI and boards that only work with MR?

Thats good point SpaceNin, If I buy an ATi MB with a chipset that supports this feature will I be able to run NV cards in SLI too or will I be screwed in the prison sense of the word? For that matter will I be able to run ATi cards in an NforceX board or will the same fate as above apply?

Personally I think that since ATi is late to the game they should make their version compataible with SLI and that NV should work to make sure their boards are as compataible with ATi's cards..... LOL. like that'll happen.

I don't give a crap what they call it, as long as it works well and is comparable or beats Nvidia's SLI.

Words of caution on NV SLi from an ATi PR manager? Hardly an impartial source!! I mean, it's her *JOB* to discourage you from buying an NV solution and buy an ATi one instead. She gave no real technical reasons to back-up her 'concerns', she's not even an engineer. Her concerns may or may not be valid but to me it looks more like she's just doing her PR job extremely well.

I was responding to CrimandEvil, who said there was a ATI rep talking down SLi. I just found the quote. I'm not saying those are reasons not to buy SLi, but the concerns stated by the ATI rep are valid and have not been addressed by nVidia yet. Except for the two mid range SLi cards not being faster than one high end card, which we know is true.

Might want to try to read up thread a bit and see the context of the post...

Yeah I wouldn't call it "talking down"...but come on...until an impartial source has "concerns" there is nothing to worry about...the fact that anyone would even link to it is completely absurd...

Geez... you guys are something else. Everyone here says ATI has "been talking down" SLi. I post an interview with an ATI PR person on SLi... it's obvious they are not talking down SLi. Now you say the interview's concerns are absurd... that's not the point. The point is that ATI never said SLi was useless... so you can't say they've flip-flopped (or something of that sort) to start developing a multiple GPU solution.

havent read any other post then the first one, but ATI has had multy card solutions for a while now ( latest was a 4 radeon 9700, 1 AGP card, 1 PCI one, both linked...), so its really nothing new for ATI.

Just remember that nVidia's arcronym may be SLI but the letters sure aint the good 'ole 3DFX acronym... I give both companies kudos for doing dual card solutions. I think we all knew it would happen.

Wow, this is pathetic. Three pages of "OMFG ATI SUKS LOLZZZ!!1". Congrats guys.

Everyone here's assuming that they're 'copying' nvidia by doing SLI. Has anyone stopped to consider that they *just might* be looking into other technologies? (Two GPU's on a single card, hey, they've done it before.)

This thread is a perfect example of why I hate this forum.

Many posters are also assuming that Nvidia is being super innovative in bringing us SLI. Do not forget that they may own the 3dfx assets, but are essentially COPYING the idea just as well.

It's not so much ATi copying Nvidia, but the both of them copying 3dfx now that the technology is right. Yes, it was bound to happen as soon as PCI-E was a reality. Whats better than selling someone a $400 Graphics card every 6 months? Selling him TWO $400 Graphics cards every 6 months.

Hmmm...if I own something, using it makes sense right? How can i copy something if i already own it and have been incorperating that technology for a while. People, 3DFX screwed themselves.

no one is coppying anybody. Multi-card rendering has been going on for quite some time... in the proffesional world...
dya think jurrassic park was rendered on a tnt2 ?
