We all know (or may know. . . possibly should know) that AMD's 90nm transition was a hit and was great for better clock scalability, power consumption, etc. Does that hold true for .13 to .11 on a VPU? If so, why didn't ATi make all their new X850's .11 fab? Isn't it also cheaper to manufacture?

Just curious is all. . .
 
Its actually harder and more expensive to make their high end cards a lower production silicon. It creates less heat and such but the low yield problems with getting enough working cards off the assembly line is too much risk to waste money on 11k. Thats why their x700 and x600 cards can easily go the low11k because the cards are cheaper and dont need to have 16 working pipelines like an X800 does.

This goes for nvidia and the 6800GT and Ultra line of cards as well.
 
THE reason:

No Low-k for .11
But low-K for .13

Low-k allows higher core clocks. search about it.
