Two X850XTs were faster than 2 6800 Ultras...but only because X850XTs were individually faster than a 6800Ultra...CrossFire does just fine but I wouldn't say that it's in any way more efficient than SLi...and right now SLi is a much more stable (and available) platform...

For the same money you could get dual 7800GTs which would be noticeably faster than two X850XTs and has more up to date features...

Right now X1800 CrossFire isn't so much available, but once it shows up, that would be a better option than the x850s as well...

Yeah, but 1 good thing that Crossfire has to offer is that it works with every game in certain rendering modes which most poeple have a hudge problem with SLi

True, it can fall back to tile-rendering, which doesn't scale geometry, and doesn't work in OpenGL...whereas nvidia only has profiles for about a hundred or so games...ATi has to have profiles built in to Catalyst AI to get things working in AFR or SFR...

In the end, nVidia's solution comes out on top because you get max performance in more games...if ATi were to catch up in terms of stability and games directly supported through profiles, then tile-rendering would give them the upperhand, but currently that's just not the case...

Interesting that they still have those pics of 14xAA vs 8xAA...the 8xAA images on an nvidia card were supplied by ATi, and nobody has been able to reproduce the "bug" they show in the picture with the missing lines...

Take that preview with a grain of salt, you'd be much better off reading the [H]'s actual review of the product instead of a copy and paste preview put out by ATi...

Well, you already have 1 X850, and the master card would only be $280 shipped from Newegg. The ASUS A8R is ~ $110 shipped from ActBuy.com right now. Total cost would be $390. I don't think it is a bad idea. Then again, you could sell the X850 and get 2 7800 GT's. I don't know what motherboard you have, so you may a SLi board. So 2*7800GTs + Board (if not already owned) =~ $700 - ~ $250 for X850 XT =~ $450. Anyways, I just bought the Asus board cause I want to try it out. I also own a X800XL. When the X800XL Crossfire Editions come down in price a bit, I will pick one up just to try it.

Like brent said....Why would you want to build your machine around old tech???

really! wow.

please do some reading on how crossfire works before stating something.

The 1600x1200 @ 60 Hz limit is a deal breaker for me R.E. X800/X850 CrossFire. Not to even mention the lack of SM 3.0 support, FP16 HDR support or a fast form of alpha texture AA in hardware.

1600x1200 never seemed an issue to me. I have an LCD and that's it's navtive resolution and refresh rate.

SM3...so what. Alpha texture AA performance is not that bad actually and FP16 HDR wasn't available with AA back then.

If you have a LCD it may be worthless to go with a multi-gpu solution.

I disagree with this opinion. I run CRT's and I find my sweet spot is 1280x1024, I'm an AA whore so I like the highest TR SSAA I can go at that resolution with all in-game effects enabled. A dual card solution can help with this. The same applies for 1600x1200, or widescreen resolutions that LCD's run at.
