I just picked up an ATI X850XT PE by visiontek yesterday, and while playing Black and White 2 the cards fan sounds weird, it makes almost a clicking sound, more like a loud "whirring".......but it could just be how the fan sounds, lil help?
 
I know it whirs when it boots, but should it be doing that in Black and White 2, I mean it doesn't do it in Quake 4, just Black and White 2....hmmmmm
 
mayb ur too engrossed in quake4 adn dont realiase....what % are you running the fan at? and what temp does your card get to?
 
To be honest I don't know what temp, All I did was install the display drivers and than get into the gaming, and yeah, you might be right about Quake 4 :p I just want to make sure its supposed to sound the way it does, when you play games can you tell a difference in the fan speeds by the sound?
By the way, do you need to install ATI's "catalyst control panel" to let the computer properly control the ATI fan speed?

you dont...you can do it through ati tool...however if i were you id upgrade to cats 5.13 because it gave me a nice little boost in 3dmark05 and gave me 4-5fps more on average in fear and source/hl2

i was running windows drivers and the ati drivers were so much better...and your doing the same so just download cats 5.13 and install :)
 
I think it is ATi related crap. I've had simular thing happen with my 9800pro a while back, it also made that sound while scrolling up and down on the internet, i have no idea why it does it but I do not think it is a big deal.
 
If it is a brand new fan, the clicking sound may be related to the PWM (pulse width modulation) type fan that adjusts fan speed by modulating pulses to the fan. Basically it works by sending power to the fan in pulses at rapid intervals.

I know that on the Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer Coolers, the PWM fans there will audibly emit a clicking sound at any fan speeds lower than 100%. I would think that ATI would not have this problem or have a filter on their own fans so that they won't click. I have an X850 Pro running at faster than XT PE speeds (stock cooling) and the fan is perfectly smooth. I've never heard of stock x850 XTs or XT PEs having this clicking though.

I do know that however, in the 3rd Party application ATI Tool, there is an option in the fan speed control settings that allows the user to choose between forcing changing the PWM frequency of the fan and it notes it is specifically for the x850 series and that might help.
 
Thx guys, I appreciate your help, but yeah, I am using ATI's drivers, not windows, but what really irritates me is that Visiontek doesn't inclued ATI's cool Catalyst Control Panel, but some windows based one.

You mean the built-in control panel? There are two different versions, one which is built-in to your existing display control panel and another as a standalone application (known as the Catalyst Control Center). But they've stopped doing this starting with 5.12 and only have the standalone, so I guess you should be happy if you really like that. You really should upgrade to the latest drivers, BTW...

Oh, and you NEED to be using ATI's drivers, not Windows', because all the Windows drivers do is basically make it so that your computer can display video while you install the actual drivers...

Oh, and in terms of the fan speed... some games seem to tax my X850XT PE more than others, for who knows what reason. When I've played these games for really long times, the fan whirrs up for a few seconds but then speeds down. I wouldn't really worry about it.
 
Its weird, its not so much of a click as a weird hiss almost, when I go into ATI tools and do the 3d view it like has a whirring hiss, but than once i minimize it immediately stops hissing, it does it in Battlefield 2 and Black and White 2, but not in Quake 4. Also my temperatures are ok...like 74c under load and about 20-40c idle.
