I have a built by ATI X850 XT PE (AGP) card in my system. I have a intel d865perlk board, with a gb of ddr 400, a intel 2.8ghz "C" cpu, 2x80gb pata, 2x120gb sata (mirrored), with an AOC LM729 LCD Monitor. Couple questions really. I am still using socket 478 and i didnt know if it would be worthwhile to upgrade my system's cpu, to say, a prescott 3.4. I am pretty sure that my cpu is bottlenecking the card a little. The second question is that image quality isnt where i think it should be. Every time i go into doom 3, i have to change the settings from 640x480 and medium quality to 1600x1200, 16aa, and high quality. However..i dont really seem to see an increase in image quality. Honestly, if i lower the quality and the aa, i really dont see an increase in fps (using Fraps). I have a fresh install of xp pro with the 5.7 catalyst drivers. Any help would be appreciated.

I never did see a question in your .... paragraph but anyways. I've heard of bugs where If you don't turn the card onto application decides or whatever that the game won't use the af / aa. So you might want to make sure it is set to application instead of specifying the settings there. As far as rendering.. You could try going into dooom 3 and specifying a different rendering device. I forget the command but I'm sure you can google it. instead of using carmacks one hit wonder for all vid cards you can specify a rendering method specific to ati or nvidia. Try that and see if you see a difference?

Maybe your monitor is holding you back? Rid of the 1996 17" and go get a new top of the line monitor? I don't know what you have so I can't tell for sure what's going on. Try those I guess and see what you come up w/.
 
I apologize. I have a LM929 (19 monitor, we order the 17inch versions at the hospital i work at). I normally go to the CCC to make sure that everything runs maxed out. Not application preference. I am really more concerned with Doom 3. Half Life 2 runs great..., Doom 3 just wont keep its settings saved. It says that the settings will take affect after restarting doom. However, after i restart it, it resets the settings back to 640x480, at low/med quality.

And to the other question, would upgrading my processor to a 3.4 ghz prescott (socket 478) realize any apparent performance increases, or would i be better off waiting to upgrade the system in a year or so so i can go dual core.
 
If you're looking for straight gaming performance, then I'd say junk the Intel setup and go with an AMD setup.

I would get an ABIT IC7 mobo to replace your Intel one and overclock the the begeezus out of your 2.8C rather than buying a PresHott.
 
How long do you think my system should last? Couple years hopefully? I wanna upgrade sometime in mid to late 2007. The problem i am having with Doom is really pissing me off however. Anyone heard of this?

Actually... Did you just install the expansion? I was having this issue when i installed that.. I forget how i fixed it though ^-^ but yes i know of the bug.... sorry i'm not much of help on this.
 
A couple weeks ago, yes. But...i think it was happening before i installed the expansion. I dont know if it started happening after 1.3 was installed though.
