SOOO... i bought this ati x800xt agp 256mb at $325 off of newegg.com

Not quite sure im happy with it or not. The performance is very nice on the call of duty 2 demo. But on f.e.a.r I was not impressed. for $325 I expected to run the fear demo flawlessly. I was going under 30fps too often during fights. I thought about OCing, but im a newb to it. I have stock cooling, but my pc cpu temp is around 35C average. I tried the ATI tool once, and i just ended up crashing so i havent touched it since. I wonder if anything is holding my system down? the RAM is pretty old. The hard drives are not the issue, i just recently bought 2 nice western digital HDs (one sata and one ide).

the only thing that isnt new on my system is the RAM and the soundcard. EVERYTHING else is completely new not more then a month old.
 
Unless you just wanted to stick with AGP, you should return it and go for an nvidia 7800GT for just a few dollars more.
 
well, i havent really been keeping up with things on the PC side.. mainly console stuff for gaming. so i didnt really know what sli was. it is really just combining the strength of two vid cards into 1 source?

Here's the thing about PC gaming, and why I find spending more than $250 on a video card so hard to swallow:

* There will ALWAYS - each and every generation - be games that are coded simply terribly. Like Far Cry....SOMEDAY....we will be able to play FEAR at high res with high FSAA and all the effects cranked. But not today.

* Because there is such a variety of PC hardware and PC games stick around "mainstream" for so long, even the GOOD coder game devs code with advanced options 'for the future'.

Ergo, no matter how much you are willing to spend, there is no way to get playable framerates on EVERY brand new game with the "details cranked" (I'm talking for today's example - FEAR with 6x or 8xS AA, alpha-texture anti-aliasing, 16xAniso, at 1600x1200, with all game details cranked. Not even dual 7800GTXs overclocked and watercooled will let that be playable.)

But with such a versatile engine I'm suprised it has been used more...
 
console gaming is so much easier... PC gaming is so fawking expensive.

What rez and settings you running in F.E.A.R.?
