ATI x800xl overclocking?

trying to overclick this x800xl i got last night at bestbuy...it only gets to 420 core and 1045 memory before i start to see problems....is this good or should i take it back and get another with hopes of getting higher?thanks.
 
The average OC from the [H]ard|Forum 3Mak05 list is 435/534 so you are not quite average.
Take it back if you really think you need to.
Or you can wait and see if some new drivers give you more OCing ability.
 
Have you thought about buying an after market cooler, should help with your o/c.

On stock cooling my connect3d x800xl card reached 450 core / 550 memory, (although it was running hot after a few hours gaming!). I bought a zalman vf700-cu, and managed to up the o/c to 468 core 576 mem. It will go slightly higher, but that's the level i feel comfortable with - the card idles at 32c / 35c, coming out of games never goes higher than 58c.

Heard good things about the Arctic Cooling AT5 rev 2 also.
