Today I was at CompUSA and saw a cheap Antec slot cooler for VGA cards. I thought hey.. I've already unlocked the 16 pipelines, let's go for XT speeds.

I bought it, installed it, idle temps were lower (4-5C)

Anyways, I setup a second profile in ATI Tool to increase clock speeds from 500/500 to 520/540 when a 3D application is detected.

I currently am using fan speed based on GPU temperature, with 100% fan coming on by 65C.

So I was benchmarking 3DMark05 with the new speeds and noticed during a game shift my GPU temperature was 95C. I quickly exited out of 3DMark and noticed ATI Tool had shut my fan OFF. The fan was OFF.

This isn't the first time it's happened either, once when I started my computer the fan was set at 0 once I entered Windows. I did hear it power on when I turned the computer on however.

whutdafuxup?

Try setting the fan to one speed constantly, then trying again. You might have to manually change fan speeds when entering a game or something. I've had problems with the temp based fan speeds in the past.

Same thing happened with my X800XL so i stuck a zalman on it and forgot about ATI tool's fan control - i was playing Chronocals Of Riddick when i hard locked and tabbed out of the game to see my temp @ 95. Ordered a zalman for it the next day.

I used rabit to edit the bios and set fan speeds at 100% (have an x2 so noise not an issue). Works like a charm and can avoid ati tool, which seems flakey to me these days.
