i was just wondering,,, when i start the ATI Tool it say
default 574.00/688.00

then the core is 573.75 and memory slider is 1363.50
what exactly does this mean and do i just click on find max core and find max memory and let it decide what i should set it at

then what to use to test the stability of the card
stupid question but this is considered overclocking correct??

oh i have a asus sli deluxe
amd x2 3800
2gb memory
ATI x1950Pro 256mb ddr3

Well, those clocks look right. The slider is apparently at actual speed so you're fine.

The "find max" buttons are used to find the highest stable overclock. My general rule is to run first the max core until your computer crashes. Load the computer back up, back off 20 MHz and test it. When you find a good stable value, do the same with the memory.

To test stability, I usually run "test for artifacts" for about 20 minutes. If there are no errors, I then test it by playing an intensive game (Oblivion works well for this) or running a 3DMark program on loop for about an hour. If everything is stable and there's no texture artifacts, it's a stable overclock.

Then, if your card supports voltage modification through ATiTool, bump up the voltages a bit and try again. You can also do this BEFORE the tests, but I recomend getting a stable overclocking base before modifying voltages. If your card doesn't do it through software (I'm not sure about the x1950 Pro), you can either stick with this overclock, or go for a hardware voltmod. There's plenty of guides about that everywhere.
 
what does the default 574.00/688.00 mean?
also should i use the ATI Tool or the Overdrive in the catalyst control panel
if not the overdrive should i disable it??
 
It means that's the Default profile (the one hard coded into the card's BIOS) and those are its default clocks.

If I'm not mistaken, you're looking at the profile select menu. When you have more than one profile (if you OC you'll need to save to a new profile), that drop down menu allows you to select and load profiles.
 
once i get to a good level i like,,, using the ATI Tool, and make new profile and set clock will it always stay at that or do i have to set it each time i reboot, and should i mess with anything at all in the Overdrive control with the catalyst control panel?
as in like lock the overdrive then the options ebable ATI Overdrive clocks for 3d apps only, and Preserve ATI Overdrive settings at logon?

also what temp should i be running at with an overclock,,, well what is too high?
