My friend gave me his ATI graphics card since I was looking for an upgrade. He said it was a 9800 but was very unsure. The car has an analog, DVI, and tv (svideo I think) out. So I plugged it up. He said that I had to plug in some sort of extra power cable so I did that, but I wasn't sure if it went on one way or the other (upside down). It seems to only go on one way so I think it's on correctly. My old card was an Nvidia GeForce4, 64MB.
So I fired up the system and the res. was horrible, but everything seemed to work. Interstingly to me, no bubble popped up out of the system tray about new hardware. I even clicked on Add New Hardware in control panel on accident when I meant to click on Add/Remove programs so that I could take off the Nvidia softare... and it didn't detect any new hardware. I uninstalled the Nvidia software first. Next, I went to ATI's, clicked on "Drivers and Software", then clicked on "Windows XP" (some sort of XP 64 bit was there but I don't think I have that), then clicked on "Windows XP Drivers and Software." Then I clicked on "Radeon"... I'm pretty sure that's what this is, according to him it is. Next I clicked on "Catalyst 5.11 Windows XP - Driver Download" and downloaded the program.
I installed the program, it told me to restart, so I did.
When I restarted Windows, the resolution was back to normal (1024x768 or whatever). After I logged on, a popup appeared saying "CLI.exe - Application Error." Details are "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application." I clicked OK, and restarted my computer thinking maybe it would help.
The computer restarted, I logged back on, same error pops up. BUT, this time, I got a bubble to install new hardware, and I let it do its work. Restarted computer again, same message. I even uninstalled ATI's software because the first time, I put it in Program Files instead of just C:. This time I put it in C (the default). Same thing is still happening. When I try to manually open the ATI Catalyst Control Center, or click on Restart Runtime, or click on Wizard, the same message pops up.
Lastly, when I go to display properties then settings in Windows, it says my Display is "Plug and Play Monitor on Radeon 9700 Pro."
I don't know what to do here... THANKS!
