hi

Im new to ATI cards, previously owned nvidia for the last 3 years or so.

a while ago i brought a X1900XTX and im still getting to grips with setting it up everytime i re install.

just want a few tips really on the best combination of software as i have read some people dont use the catalyst interface for varying reasons including its use of system resources. is there a better one to use then and is there a way of installing the drivers without the catylist tool?

how have you set yours up?

The thing about the CCC is this:

It requires the Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 to run. That, in-and-of-itself is no big deal. Many programs require it. However, if you don't already have .NET framework 2.0 installed, it causes some things to happen that you might want to be aware of. It creates a couple of user accounts that are hidden. No big deal, really, BUT it does cause the logonui to come up, even if you only have one account listed. You have to use something like TweakUI to "hide" the .NET accounts from the login screen to make it stop. If you use a password for your windows account, this is no big deal, and there is no noticeable change.

The Catalyst Control Center interface is clunky and slow, and it uses a lot of resources while running. However, when not running, it doesn't do much. There is a tray icon that runs, but I'm pretty sure it's there even if you don't install the CCC.

If you want an alternative, try the Guru3d ATITray Tools. They are pretty popular around here. For overclocking, most use ATITool.

For me, I've had only very limited success with ATITool, so I use Guru3d's RivaTuner. It has proven quite reliable to me for overclocking ATI video cards.

To install the drivers without the CCC, simply select the option to do a custom install. This will give you a list of what components you want installed, then simply deselect the CCC.
