Thinking about building my nephew a cheap comp, looking at an Asus Barebones with this chipset. Will the onboard video be able to play a decent selection of games? (Albeit, low resolutions)

* i guess this is the right forum *

AFAIK the xpress 200 is only a northbridge, so you will still need a vid card

think of it like the Nforce 4 mobos, same thing, just different brand

No, ALL onboard video is too slow for the newer games. fear, quake4, doom3, bf2 will barely run even at 640x480. Games like farcry and HL2 (coded well) will work but hey are not really new games anymore.

No, not really. I had an Xpress 200M laptop last year with 128MB dedicated memory plus 128MB HyperMemory on S939 with dual channel memory and it was about 3/4 the speed of a 9600 SE. Desktop versions come with 0MB - 32MB of dedicated memory and perform even worse.

If budget is a concern, an older model motherboard plus a cheap video card will be much better for gaming. If you post how much the Asus barebone system costs we can suggest an alternative in the same budget range.

edit: some Xpress 200 integrated graphics benchmarks: http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=433

all I could say about this chipset (having owned one before going lappy) is that it's pretty darn stable for a "cheap" chipset.

Its a great chipset for a cheapy biuld and has decent video. The video is just not for gaming.

I have a problem with thinking 'small'. My brother is on hard times at work and my nephew is breaking his balls. I figgered maybe I can get him something to shut him up for a bit. Maybe toss a PCI Express card in down the road. I had a full box with this at about 600 bucks, though I'd like to pay even less, i guess I can just order him a Dell. I need to upgrade MY box too though, hehe

My ascock mainboard has a onboard x300 and it is far from any real use for modern games, for example NFS=Most Wanted is only almost playable in 640x480 low details. Some games do fair a little better like HL2, but generally its pants. And definately not help by having a celeron.
