I just bought this card from Comp USA using a gift certificate. I read different accounts on different boards on if this card can have the extra 4 pipes unlocked or not. This card is the built by ATI brand. Can it be flashed , and if not can it be softmodded or am I going to have to just let it be. Even if I don't flash this card is it way better then my old Radeon 9800 pro? I got the card for nothing so I can't bitch but if I can get it to work with the 16 pipes open why not try.
 
That figures lol , does the extra 4 pipes really make a huge difference? I only play games at 1024*768 never any higher res then that.

Yes and no.
YES: You will get better benches and you will notice a little boost in performance.
NO: Because if you just got it from compusa, its a new model and cant be unlocked. ATI as of late have been hardcutting their pipes. You can't even go in and mod them. SO flash at your own risk and pray you dont toast your bios.

As is, the 850pro is a REALLY good card. I have one and there isn't much I cant play on the highest settings at native res.
 
Is there anyway to tell if the model i have has the pipes crippled for sure as I do have the rage theater chip and the yellow connector on the card and it does say VIVO on the outside of the box so I am pretty sure I have the VIVO version. I looked at the pic on that other board that shows the pipes but i cant find that on my card..on what side is the pipes located , is it under the fan? TIA for any help.

yeah you have to take the heatsink off and look at the actual processor to see if it is cut
 
I just took off the fan and i seen in the top right corner the pipes and there was no laser cut in between the left 2 small circles so I assume its not cut.
 
I have an ATI X850 PRO sucessfully modded to 16 pipes. :) I got mine from Circuit city not so long ago... it works great and yep it increases the performance...
 
OH CRAP , i was able to flash it no problem to get the full 16 pipes open but using atitool it says my temps are always at idle between 55 and 90 even when I put the clock speeds back to the below there original speeds both core and memory!! What should I do???? HELP HELP HELP..
 
I flashed back to the old bios...I know now why it stayed hotter as the fan wasn't on all the time anymore with that bios I used even if I put it to 90% in atitool it wasn't going on for long stretches of time.
 
I flashed it again to reopen the other 4 pipes but used a different bios that didn't turn my fan off and so far its working great , 16 open pipes and the damn thing can be clocked real high but I am leaving it at 520/540 for now..thx for the help.
 
glad your x850pro unlocked successfully! i am also interested in doing this, but was wondering if you could tell us the first 6 digits of your serial number on that card. it should be like 180530 or something like that. thanks!
