ATI Radeon X300 Driver Issues

Hi Everyone,

I figure this is a longshot but I need some help. I have an old computer that I use mostly for web and some random urban terror (my laptop is in for repair). It has an ATI radeon X300 graphics card and it was working fine except sometimes when VLC would try to play a video it would be all black, I thought this might be a graphics acceleration problem and since the graphics divers were really old ~2005 I went to AMD/ATI to download the new ones.

After I installed the new ones my performance and quality in urbanterror (quake III mod, openGL graphics) droped from ~120fps to ~60fps and the quality actually got worse.

I tried to roll-back the driver but it wouldn't work and just kept on asking for some cd which I don't have.

I'm not sure if this is a known issue with older cards and older games but I would really hope I could get the old drivers back (I don't need the catalyst control center and what not).

I'm stupid for not writing down the old driver version but I remember it said 2005. Any help would be great!

Thanks very much,

Well, I solved the problem. I figured since the computer is a Dell Dimension E510 I would check the Dell website and see which drivers they recommended. They had the 8.23.0.0 from 2/9/2006 (slightly newer than what I had) so I installed them and urbanterror works great again.

Thanks anyway everyone.

Which driver did you try that gave you issues?

The latest legacy driver that should work with that card is the 10.2 drivers, which are only one year old - a lot better than 5 years old. The 10.2 drivers work great with an X800XT-PE and an X850XT that I still have in use.

I used the latest available from the AMD/ATI website the 10.2 drivers for Win XP 32bit. The difference in quality was pretty noticeable when going back to the old drivers and the framerate jumped up almost 100%.

ya that kind of thing is normal though iv can't remember seeing a case in the past were the fps drop was that bad.

thing is when a card is new the drivers are beta and maybe a little buggy.

over time they get better up to a point.

after that as the card gets old sometimes but not all ways the drivers try and keep up with newer software trading speed vs compatibility and/or image quality.

long story short my self i all way try and keep the drivers somewhere in the middle of the road for their age, imho it works out better this way and if your trying to run software that's really out of bounds for the kind of hardware you have chances are it wasn't going to work out in any case regardless just for a different reason beside the driver one.

btw forgot to add the x300 gpu is the same as the gpu in the 9800xt just smaller on the nm topic.

it was one of the most overclock-able gpu out their and its not uncommon for the chip to be able to go from 325MHz ~ 700MHz with improved cooling ,the x300 should have a 128 bit memory bus as well and really that's what will hold you back the most,9800xt has a 256bit memory bus 850mgz ddr
