anyone know how they do the numbering (3450, 4350...) or where I can find the comparison table?

Thanks!

#xxx is generation
x#xx is class. ~8 is enthusiast, ~7 and 5 are mainstream, and ~3 is entry level
xx#x is minor stepping change

The first digit is the generation. For example, the HD4870 is one generation on from the HD3870.
The other 3 digits are an approximate performance indicator. For example, a 4870 is a better performer is a 4770. However, performance may overlap between graphics cards with different second digits; the 4770 is approximately equal to the 4850, and definitely better than the 4830. With the last 2 digits AMD generally tends to use -90, -70, -50, and -30, in order of decreasing performance. -70 and -50 are the ones present at launch, and if the 4890 is anything to go by, the -90 is reserved for refreshed and optimized chips based on the -70 card.

Hope that helps. I could probably have explained it better...

Yep.

Difference between generations are usualy major features like eyefinity and DirectX support along with major performance increase, difference between class is usually just major performance difference within that generation, and minor stepping changes tend to just be minor clock speed changes between that class.

So this generation is the 5xxx range, the enthusiast/performance class are 5970 (dual GPU) and then 5870 and 5850 which are the single GPU enthusiast. Then a class down is the mainstream cards the 5770 and 5750. There's no entry level ATI cards at the moment.

Usually makes more sense in a grid, Class revisions going down and then minor stepping change revisions going across, would look like:

5970
5850 / 5870
5770 / 5770
