ATI Radeon HD 4200

I purchased a computer with an ATI Radeon HD 4200 video card. Will this be sufficient for running online multi player games such as Black Ops?
 
did you even check the recommendations for Black Ops? no way it will be very smooth on that gpu. the 4200 cannot handle many modern games even on low settings. for some perspective a 4200 has 40sp while even a somewhat low end card like the 5750 has 720sp.
 
Maybe on very low settings? What resolution are you running and what power supply do you have (wattage and model/brand)?
 
Its terrible. I was using one and couldn't get above 20fps in a Source engine game with all the settings on low.

a "Source game"? and what game would that be because a 4200 should have zero trouble with any Source game on low settings?
 
I am typing on a 4200 right now on my HTPC. It can actually run a whole lot of games, but it is THOROUGHLY limited by resolution. I was playing Beyond Good and Evil, but had to drop it to around 1280x720 to get a good framerate out of it.

It's a fantastic little onboard chip...go ahead and see what you can get out of it.

I suspect that had more to do with the processor inside a computer with an integrated graphics card than it did with the 4200.

You might be able to get some decent gameplay out of it, but you would definitely want to lower the resolution.

there is no cpu that would be the bottleneck in a pc that actually comes with a 4200.
 
On my Gateway laptop with the Radeon 4200, I can run the following games :

Civilisation 4, Torchlight, Plants vs Zombies, Titan Quest, Sim City 3000

Forget any games lauched over the last 18 months but it's a surprising integrated graphics solution.

For Black Ops, a recent dedicated card must be added to your system to play this game at its full potential.
 
I've played COD4,Dirt2, StarCraft2, Mass effect 2 on my Turion x2 TL-60 with a Radeon 3200. They played fine with ultra low settings and with the resolutions set as low as possible(640x480). In fact, I beat StarCraft 2 on my 3200 (thanks to it's slowness, I survived that last Zerg Rush!) I'd imagine a 4200 is a better card, it's based on the Radeon 3400 where as the 3200 is based on the Radeon 2400, so I'd imagine the 4200 would be decent, especially for onboard video. It is quite a bit better than even the onboard graphics with the i3/i5 chips, which is kinda lopsided considering how much faster they are compared to the AthlonII/TurionII/Phenom II's that are paired with the 4200's.

CPU was a 1055T, don't think it was a bottleneck. I was trying to game on the IGP while waiting for my dedicated card to come in the mail.

It's not a bad IGP, seemed fine for general use, but even on older games you'd definitely want to turn down the settings and lower the resolution. Even a $25 discrete graphics card is a solid upgrade from it. I just had some initial shock when I found that games played worse on it than they did on my old Radeon X1300 Pro.

well the 4200 is actually a slightly better gpu than the x1300 in some ways.
 
You can get a 5770 for $99 AR in most case nowadays.
You never did mention your budget, resolution, or PSU so I'm going to assume that it's on the low end. Really there's not much advice to give except integrated graphics are pretty crappy and don't expect to run Black Ops on it with any kind of eye candy enabled.
 
haha, no IGP in existence can run any game made after 2005 better than about 20fps (depending on settings).
 
I played and beat Prototype, RE5, Batman:AA, GTA IV, Starcraft 2, COD:MW2 all on the HD4200 at minimal settings. It'll probably run, but whether or not it's (barely) playable depends on your tolerance. There's no harm trying if you're just waiting for your dedicated video card to arrive unless you didn't want to ruin your stats. Could always fiddle around in singleplayer mode in the mean time.
 
i have played dod:s on 4200 with a b550 as stock. everything as low as it goes rez 1440 x 900 and it was ok (30-100 fps).

true. but the statement that it can't is misleading. it just isn't going to do anything well. for IG its still a pretty good solution. its just going to be limited to older or very limited games.

I had an mx440 now that you mention it LOL
 
I am running my 4200 right now since im waiting on my 4890. Im going to run HL 2 & all my source games so see what it can do
 
Good luck with that, haha. I'm sure the 4890 will perform just a bit better ;)
 
Yeah I know im just bored so I figured what the heck. New card dont come till tomorrow so im stuck on the 4200
