is it possible to use 3 displays and duplicate two and extend one? the settings seem to indicate so but i cannot get it to work to save my life.

setup, 1 flat screen DVI, one old crt vga but using a DVI adapter which doesnt show up unless i have it plugged into the bottom dvi port, is this my problem? and one LCD tv using HDMI port. I tried going from HDMI on card to my tv and/or my audio receiver, it will not work if all three are plugged in, i can get any two to work just fine, but not all three. any ideas? i want all three! Ideally id duplicate the flatscreen monitor and the LCD tv, as i use my pc for my MAIN TV source and extend the old crt so i can have two minitors in computer room and LCD tv in the other room with wireless keyboard and mouse. driving me insane, is this card incapable of using this setup with these monitors or am i a moron and missing a setting somewhere? do i need to get some of the other connections this card has(forget what they are called but they are tiny, display port or something, got 2 of them) i cannot figure it out, thinking the old CRT might be my weak link though. any info appreciated, thanks.
 
I seem to recall the second DVI port and HDMI port are shared so you can only use one at a time. You need a display port to DVI adapter.
You can use 2 DVI ports and a display port or 1 DVI port, 1 HDMI port and 1 display port.

ah, ok, thanks for info. That would explain it, course i have no display port adapter or any monitor with such a cord end, lol, amazon.com here i come!

actually i got a hdmi to display port, gonna try 2 dvi and one display port. results to follow.
 
ahh poop, acutally its not, some weird plug with a downturn on each end inside, not sure what that plugs into, but its not hdmi, only tapers on one side.
 
actually after googling cables that is display port, but my card has no display port, its got whats at the other end of that adapter, which is much smaller. whats that one called?
 
ok, now im really confused, it says it can handle 6 displays at a time but theres only 5 ports and only 4 work at a time apparently, huh? forgive my ignorance, been out of the game for a long time, now im feeling like a noob again, lol
 
I think mini display port is what you are looking for and you probably need an active adapter. May help if you list your exact card model.
 
how do you know if its active or passive? i think it came with it, though i do have a couple of the vga to dvi. Its an HD 6970 2G GDDR5 PCI-E made by saphire, that the info you wanted? thats all it says on the box.sku is 11187-00-40R.

I guess it says you gotta daisy chain the 6 monitors from the 2 display ports.

Just search for the word active (i.e. "Mini DisplayPort to DVI Active"). It will be in the product description, just like the part I linked for you above. This is the search term I used in Google to find your adapter.

Also, expect to pay at least $20 for an active adapter, because it has extra electrons on-board. Passive adapters are typically 10 bucks or less, which is another easy sign of what you are buying.
 
Got a Mini display port to hdmi adapter and plugged my main monitor into hdmi to mini display port adapter as well as lcd tv hdmi into the hdmi to mini display port adapter and the other monitor (vga) with dvi adapter into both dvi ports with varying combinations but still only two at a time works, be it mini display port and hdmi and vga with dvi adapter in either dvi port, either hdmi through the mini display port, not happening. i can get one DVI and one HDMI or one mini display port and one dvi but not one mini display port and one hdmi and never both DVI unless theres no display port or hdmi port plugged in.

I can only ever get two at a time working, never all 3. is it possible or am i missing something? thanks.

also if you buy an adapter from a place like newegg or amazon there should be plenty of people talking about it in the reviews saying it worked for eyefinity or not.

Can you link the adapter you actually bought?

Ieyasu is right: since these are first-gen devices, it's easy to screw these things up compatibility-wise.
 
Sounds like you are using a passive adapter.

The difference between a passive adapter and an active one is the clock signal - a HD6970 can output only 2 clock signals (which is why you can have 2 DVI or 1 HDMI/1 DVI but not all 3). The passive adapter needs the clock signal from the GPU, the active adapter creates its own. If you own a DisplayPort monitor you can avoid the adapter as DisplayPort is packet-based and doesn't use a clock signal.

If only 2 displays work when using the adapter it is passive.

There are 2 types of active adapters, single-link and dual-link.

Single-link require no ext. power but are limited to 1080p 60Hz, they are about $25.

Dual-link use USB for ext. power but can go 2560x1600 60Hz or 1080p 120Hz, they are around $85.

I own a HD6950 and a HD6990 and I have successfully have plugged in 6 monitors to a single card (without a MST 1.2 hub) using active adapters and DVI.

Ok thanks, it must be passive then, it came with the card i think. Ill check into an active one for that monitor.
