ATI R600 taps out.

I read the other day that the R600 has tapped out. Thats not what I am actually posting about. I can't find the article but I will look some more.

The thing that struck myself was the article said it tapped out at 65nm. The fab maker wasn't given . I don't believe that ATI's normal fab has 65nm in place so who tapped the R600 out.

I think this is closer to being correct . but who can really say. I have been told the only part that will be 80nm will be the memory controller.

ATI is going to manufacture the R600 series on 80nm and 65nm for different models. In the past ATI has used the newer (and riskier) process on low end parts first. I'd be surprised if the R600 isn't an 80nm part to prevent delays, so I doubt that part of Xbitlabs and VR-Zone articles.
 
I know I read that Intel is going to be making GPU high end cards in the future. I am think these 2 are really in bed together. More than likely wrong but its closer to reality than AMD buying ATI.
 
65nm you say...

If the rumors of ATI and Nvidia going overboard with the power draw on their next gen DX10 cards holds any truth then their chip refreshes looks like the better time to strike...better performance and lower power (like the 7800GTX vs the 7900GT). But with the possiblity of ATI's 3 card Crossfire Physics system I would think that they would be forward looking with the overall system picture.
 
65nm would (IMO) be only possible for an R600 refresh; TSMC only recently embraced 80nm "half-node" tech, none of which has yet made it to market.

Going 65nm in the next 6 months seems way too quick. AFAIK TSMC has yet to publicly announce 65nm sampling.
 
Were does it say it tapped out at TSMC. I hinted that it may be Intel that taped it out.

Who knows but by all reports R600 will be 80nm and 65nm . So ati had to have a tap out or it will not be here for Xmas . I know it sounds like a broken record but I have said for 9months that Intel likes ATi's patented memory controller. Deals have been made and the makings of strange bed partners is underway . My opinion only. But the fact that ATI tapped out at 65nm . Makes things very interesting.

The one thing I haven't heard much speculation about is the price and models. I'm guessing there will be a X2800XT and maybe a X2800XTX. We can probably expect the R600 to sell for $500-600, right? Do you think it could go even higher if it spanks the G80?

Given IBM is in league with a few others (memory where art thou?) working on 45nm, then a 65nm Fishkill product could be possible. 2 derivates of R600 on separate processes screams refresh though, as simultaneous development and production at 2 different nodes is not exactly fast or cost effective.

These are gonna be big chippies, so expect initially high failure rates, meaning probably a few SKUs based on faulty chips (ie X1900GT). I believe the first revision will be one of the power hungry beasties that we have heard about, with a 65nm revision hopefully upping performance while lowering power consumption.


EDIT: If they do get this out at 65nm though, 'Oly Shit are we in for some performance...
 
All I hear is potential for a 200mhz GPU OC off of air : ) I wonder what will limit the GPU more for overclocking with 65nm. Seems like 65nm should finally allow insane OC's that previously needed H2o to achieve.That is of course if they don't danged near max out the core as Nvidea loves to do . If thethe R580 can reach 700mhz then the R600 with 65nm should be able to do 800+ ya think ?

I'd hate to leave AMD but if the Conroes walk all over the A64's with thier 65nm process I may have to leave AMD after all these years. R600 + Conroe should own especially with Sli/Xfire multi GPU mobo's.

Its almost a given at this point that Intel is going to walk all over AMD for a few months with Conroe. Several end users have already gotten ahold of EE samples of Conroe and its been reviewed by a number of respected hardware sites. Its obvious that AMD has no answer to Conroe at this point and that is why they're going to have to throw a huge price cut at the release date. AMD may answer with K8L early next year but who knows. Intel is going to be sitting pretty for the rest of this year anyways. Conroe is a performance beast and it overclocks very well. Conroe pricing is also very competitive.
