ATI R580 taped out

hr r520 is going to have less pipes so I would think even if somehow they managed more speed with insane clocks nvidia could easily counter w/ more mem and higher clocks. i'm not upgrading until we see some 512mb cards w/ at least 24 pipes. even then I'm waiting 2 months after they are out to see the bugs.

Actually, his statement was completely true. Get ready for this one: NO ONE KNOWS.

Wait a second...with cards that have no benches, you're telling him to get his numbers straight, because one card "better be" better than another? Anyone think that's at least slightly nonsensical?

You should be taking about R520 not R580 ....

I'm talking about the Rwhatever, they both give the same performance.....Nonexsistant.

The way I look at it it this: even if this gen. stinks at least ATI's gotten to .90nm. That's going to be a huge help with future gens. Nvidia still has to make the leap.

Yes, but NVIDIA now has the luxury of making the leap using their 7xxx series. Instead of proving out a whole new core at the same time.

As has been shown by ATi and Intel (and maybe AMD?) The leap to 90nm is not easy no matter on what terms you do it on. Hopefully nVidia will have a successful leap because that means better cards more quickly for the consumer :)

Not to be mean or anything but wasn't the first tapeout of the R520 in 2004?
First tapeout(or 2nd or 3rd) means nothing, all that matters is when the cards hit the stores...

Terra - I could be mistaken...

I've given up on this crap. All these people are going ape shit at any little hint of what Ati has planned. I also am disapointed with the people who claim the 7800gtx is SUCH a good card. No it isn't, compared to the leap the last generation of cards took it isn't such an amazing card. When you have benchmark comparisons with the previous generation and the settings aren't cranked up too much higher and the fps is just a little more then in my eyes the card is NOT that great. Damn this forum, all you guys have way too much time on your hands. Go smoke some pot and relax, jesus people.

Apparantly the R580 only took 1 tape out and will presumably be released next year

R520 - 90nm supposed to be on par, possibly a little better then the 7800GTX due to 600mhz core clocks and sucjh

R580 - next gen card

ATI has the advantage - i dont NVIDIA can simply counter the R520 if it is better with higher clocks since it is still ont he 1**nm process - where ATi is on the 90nm which is what allows ATI faster clocks and they could probably push it further then 600.

When NVIDIA goes to 90nm i would not be suprised if they have the same issues ATI does and then ATI will be on top and again when either company goes to 60nm back and forth!

 actually if you look at benchmarks the 7800GTX pulls away from previous gens at higher settings. And I wouldnt expect them too at lower setttings because the previous gen cards could already play all games out at close to full settings. The reason the 7800GTX doesn't seem so much better is because there aren't games out there that the previous gen cards struggle on.

There are all sorts of things that go into max settings possible. For one thing, monitor and the game itself.

The previous gen cant handle anything over 16x12 well, the GTX can. I forgot the name of the setting that allows this, but the previous gen could only do 2.0mpixels (or something), but the GTX can do 3. 16x12 is about 2 mpixels.

Games are moving more towards heavy shader requirements (or at least nvidia thinks so). The GTX pwns previous gen at that. So IF that happens, you will see a huge drop in performance by previous gen stuff that you won't in the GTX.

Those are some of the good things about it that it has over previous gen.

Besides, it's not like they are that much more expensive than prev. gen stuff. What do you want? 3x the performance for $50 more?

it will be gettin very silly of ati releasin R520, RV515, RV530, and R580 @ the same time. :p

Edit: so it's offical that R520 have 16 pipelines?

gogo ATI!

Hopefully the R52 will have something top bring to the table against nVidia's 7800GTX, that way I can upgrade some more and sell off this X800XL in favor of it. :p

r520 is 500mhz - 600 mhz and 16 pipes.

7800gtx is 430 mhz and 24 pipes.

nvidia has 'stronger' performance per mhz than ati. also nvidia has the advantage of going to 90 nano and making even faster chips. ati does not since they are going 90 nano now just to keep up.

ati's ceo has already stated the r520 will be lucky to match the 7800 in conference calls.

thus that one reason the news on the r580 being ok and will come out soon is being released.

its much like the nv30 where nvidia worked to get it out and realized it sucked and then rushed the nv35 to compete.

Apparently there are two contradicting pieces of information:

http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=170101456

Also even if it is 16pipelines its a new breed of pipelines that are probably more efficient than the current pipeline. and there is defenitelly an option for 32pipelines in the future of the R5xx chip. The size of the die is the same as an X850 whilst the manufacturing process is smaller, thus they are able to fit more pipelines on one die with many features.

Noticing that several websites and news groups have different bits and pieces of information, I for one, do not trust any of the info presented. I would much rather wait up and see the ACTUAL card and the ACTUAL specs. of it without news group speculation and false information.

Simply isnt true. First off if you are an enthusiast, you're 7800 is not doing 430, its 450-490 which is what the more popular brands have. Then theres the 40MHz scalable clock that raises it anywhere from 440-530MHz on the pixel pipes (i believe). I dont mean to create an argument, but if ATI released a card at 400, then most of the cards created ran at ~500, i dont call it a 400 for comparison. So lets be realistic about Nvidia's widely varrying and more popular clock speeds. Many GTX such as the XFX OC and KO's are very very close (and over with dynamic clock in action) to whats been stated the more common clock of the R520. Nvidia maybe doin a little more work, but actually its funny, cause WE DONT KNOW, since theres no benchmarks. I have no idea how you came to that conclusion that Nvidia is more efficiant without one game test or benchmark for comparison.

Again, Nvidia has an advantage to go 90nm, ATI had to in order to keep up? Total BS comment. ATI could of went 110nm and worked off the same clocks. It wont shock me if these early cores are hot and leaking badly. Nvidia has to face that at some point. ATI on the other hand can refine 90nm and further advance their cores to become more stable. What you stated so boldly is complete speculation and hinting strongly to bias.

ATI's CEO did not say it would be lucky, he said
ATI believes the R520 should exceed the GeForce 7800 GTX in benchmark tests if it can get the proper clock speed, but recognizes that NVIDIA has some headroom to overclock the GeForce 7800 clock speeds.

I dont know why you choose to twist the words to help you nvidia bots.

NV30 comparison, very nice, no card, no name, no nothing, and you are telling us how ATI is operating....

In summation, ATI's officially unanounced product has lost to the 7800GTX before one benchmark and you feel the need to notify everyone that you know this. You must be joking.

Well put, and I couldn't agree more. You can't judge a product that's not out yet based on pure speculation.

Someitmes I kinda enjoy sitting back and watching all of you argue and trade insults and practically shove your opinions down each others throats. I'm almost glad I'm still on AGP so I can make a decent and informed decision about whats going into my new rig in Spring of '05. <---[make that '06 lol]

If you look at the specs, one wouldn't think it would be that much faster

For example:

7800GTX fillrate 430x24=10320
X850XTPE fillrate 540x16=8640

Not exactly a huge difference, only a very small boost in memory speed as well
