Just to sum it up, ati has finally created a sucessful chip for there new card. The main leak problem is fixed and production is now about to go underway. Any day now it should enter production on the mainstream. We should be seeing the card by late august....last week or early september(first two weeks). (This will be just in time for the school computer buying rush)

The inq posted a blurb yesterday saying the r520 had finally taped out.

http://www.theinquirer.net./?article=24540
As always take it with a sahara full of salt.

If it is actually taped out im hoping early september for availabilty of both pci-e and hopefully agp versions, if its just pci-e then bollocks to that. :(

If that is the release im thinking wtf happens to the crossfire x800 cards? Is anyone gonna buy one with the release of the newer, faster, more upto date card in like a month and a half?

Surely pci-e would be needed for the bandwidth for this card?

Doubt it, agp 4x on the pc has barely been used to its extent nevermind 8x. The pci-e bandwagon was more for multiple cards and lower power consumption (or being able to feed the cards more power, one of the 2) than anything else i think.

Well seeing as they are releasing an agp version.....probably not

I dunno if ati has ever said they were, i seen some articles saying "if theres a demand" probably the dumbest statement ever seeing as agp owners outnumber pci-e 100-1 or more. Ati were making such a big deal out of their bridge chip...hopefully they use it and bidge r520 over. I can't really be arsed spending more money on a motherboard and cpu when my current setup is perfectly fine, i just want a graphics card upgrade not a totally new system. :(

Days late, dollars short. AMD should buy them up, that would be awesome. On another point, too bad the 7800 GTX didnt ship in AGP.

I think the new radeon line is going to have alot of problems. for one, its not going to be that amazing of a card. 2, I think crossfire is going to run into performance problems. The reason being you dont have to have an identical card in their "crossfire" unlike sli, which will probably significantly cut down on performance. just my 2 cents. I guess we will have to wait and see.

The gypsy fortune teller at the carnival passing through town tell you this?

The x850s in crossfire mode already showed really good performance. I would think r520's crossfire would follow suit. And, the cards required to do crossfire have to be in teh same family. x800's won't work with x850's.

Only thing you said that holds any water.

Yeah, forgot to add in my post. Until I see a reputable source telling us this, I don't believe it.

And don't let it be The Inq...

Terra - Curious...

I think it was on the same website with the Loch Ness Monster selling a R520 to Big Foot. It came with a copy of Duke Nukem Forever.

I agree with you. The card isnt even out yet, and people are doubting it. Just because it had problems in making a successful chip, doesnt mean it will have problems now. ATI, could of half assed the R520 if they wanted to, but decided they wanted to fix it initial problems it had. I just love how many people are loyal to Nvidia now, because they released the 7800GTX first.

Brand loyalty is a fkin joke. Brand loyalty only means one thing : You are weak minded and have bought into whatever the brands marketing and advertisement monkeys have been feeding you.

To say that teh current offerings of one brand are better than anothers is perfectly acceptable, if the statement is based on factual evidence. To state that an unreleased product is better or worse than another companies current or future products is just plain dumb.

When it's out, we'll know. Until then, making statements about unreleased products is not very smart.

They've already succeeded in making a chip, it's the yields that are in question. If out of an entire wafer, only 20 worked, that's still 20 chips, but 20 expensive chips. That's the one that held them up in the first place.

They had better get the chips out after three tapeouts.

Does the R520 have any notable features? In order to qualify for the title "Amazing" the card must have an attribute that will pwn their competition.

Can you give me a link where i can buy them? (Not preorder)

This is HardOCP, if there was a crossfire, we'd have someone bragging his brand new e-penis all over the boards :p

32 pipes would qualify as amazing to me. All rumors and spec. at this point though. I am hoping the main reason that it is taking ATI so long is that they are making PCI-E and AGP at the same time. God a dual launch would be so awesome.

Who knows? I don't, and neither does anyone else here. You'll notice I did not imply that they did, or that the 520 would be an amazing video card. I was putting forth that making assumptions in either direction was dumb.

Again, at no time was I talking about the availablity of ATIs crossfire to the public at this time. I was stating that what WAS known showed crossfire in a fairly positive light. You are discounting the information I gave by using an argument that has nothing to do with my statement. This is what's commonly referred to as a strawman fallacy. If green apples have higher vitamin c content than red apples, they just plain do, whether they are available to you or not.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

I uh, I didn't make any assumptions other than the 520 would probably perform similarly well (relatively speaking) in crossfire as the x850's did.
Listen, I have no brand loyalty. I buy the best thats out that I can afford when I buy something. I at no time stated the 520 was going to be good or bad in relation to nVidias offerings.
So I really don't know what you are getting at. Maybe you aren't getting at anything.

They wouldn't need multiple tape-outs just to support AGP - they'll be probably using Rialto anyway and won't make native AGP r520 parts. I am willing to bet that their yield issues are 100% clock speed related. As much has been hinted by people who should know.

If I had to make an uneducated guess, I'd agree. Thats a fast (in MHz) GPU, if it really is going to be 600 mhz. The complexity at that speed had got to screw with them a bit.

Good this lets me forget about the 7800 GTX alltogether 8^). I hate Nvidia's drivers, I don't believe I've changed my drivers around as much as I have since I went Nvidia in the past year...

You sure that's not just because there are a lot more Nvidia than ATi drivers available?

SLI RULES. You cannot dispute that. So far crossfire is vaporware. I AM anxiuos to see this ATI card, but IT has to be excellent to make up for lost time. Yes ive always had nVIDIA cards. Perhaps Im a fan???? have an excellent day. (now retreating behind a solid concrete barrier, awaiting seismic backlash.)

Using personal jabs as ammunition for an argument is mature? How old are you anyway?

Asking questions is just the best method to get information. Rather than bring forth an argument and knock heads, knowing that your opinions would just keep conflicting. It's settled more peacefully and quickly by asking each side. If he answers it properly, the argument is settled. Quick and less messy. If his explanation isn't clear, ask again. If he doesn't have an answer, the entire argument was pointless.

At no point in the thread was any kind of solid anything presented (Does Inq count?). Just personal opinions, which don't mean crap.

Will the R520 perform well in crossfire? The X800Crossfireisn't out yet and we're already using it to make assumptions on the R520? Even though the R520 is supposed to be an entirely new architecture?

yeah its all bs untill its on store shelves. (or internet "shelves" :) )

kinda like half life 2 was...

Sly, I seriously can't fathom what you are on about. He did not ask any questions, he made statements. (I assume you are talking about my reply to Homer, yes?)
What personal jabs did I make? I said only that making statements as if they were fact such as "The r520 isnt going to be that good" was just dumb. Which it is. Nothing to back it up, no past data to reference to, nothing.
I haven't been stating much opinion. As you said, at no point has solid data been pointed out in regards to the statements made. So you are agreeing with me that blanket statements shouldn't be made? And opinions should be backed with some historical, factual data, correct?
Good, I'm glad we can agree on something.

rawR!! I like you too! :) I like every one here on hard. except some times the big boys think they know more than the other guy and multi page threads break out because of back and fourth fighting. Learn to use the PM!! :D

But...but... My e-penis will shrink if I do not respond to public attacks publically!

Hmmm... let me ponder upon this one..... so your saying when you fight in public, its like a sort of e-viagra?

Yes.

Now back to the subject. :)
