Hey guys

i was wondering if its possible to remove this square silver lip around the chip. I was told that if you heat it up a little, it comes right right off. If so what is the best method doing so, Blow dryer perhaps ...

Thanks in advance

Yes it is removable and unless you are using a thermal pad between the heatsink and gpu, you will have to remove it. This is because use of any heatsink that does not have a raised pad or surface will not be able to contact the chip.

How to remove it varies, I have heard everything from heat it up to freeze it overnight. Probably both would work, but use an exacto blade to cut the glue that is holding it on.

Didn't need to remove mine for a Zalman VF-700Cu. Might I ask why you are removing yours?

It's easier to remove these shims than the IHS of a CPU because at least you can see the SMD's so as to avoid nicking them with a blade. It was a piece of cake with a thin razor on my 9700p, but I don't think any video card since the 9700 has had a problem where the shim is taller than the core (causing little to no contact with aftermarket cooling).
