ATI - Quad GPU Folding Boxen

Since I have gotten a couple of question about the setup of an ATI boxen, I will show you one of mine and give you some specs..

Specs:
AMD 9350e Quad Core CPU
MSI K9A2 Platinum Motherboard
Vista x64 Ultimate
4GB G-Skill DDR2-6400 Ram
Corsair 750w Power Supply
3 x HIS 4850 ICEQ Turbo Edition
1 x HIS 4850 Standard

System is using 396w with all 4 GPU active. Total CPU load is at 90%.

I have not done any cable management yet, that is next week.

Each GPU is running about 2800 PPD. Most of my Single GPU systems get 3200 PPD

Currently the ATI core is doing a high number of "readbacks" to the card, and this issue is being looked into my mike houston over at ATI.

When the readback issue is solved & gpu load goad back to 99%, I expect to get around 3500 PPD with current mid-sized proteins.
As the large proteins come out for ATI, the PPD should continue to go up.
CPU load should also go down when additions core changes.

Temps average about 62c during folding on all cards --> 70% fan speed
(I set fans high to max airflow, but that fan % level is really not needed to keep gpus cool)

 
Setups like that should make AMD shareholders happy. That looks nice there EA.

This looks nice. I want to build a multi-GPU ATI box as well, but was planning on basing it on corei7 and making it my main machine. i7 should have enough headroom to run a couple SMPs as well as support the GPUs. This machine will probably pull a chunk of power with an OCed i7 920 and maybe 4850x2s if the card is feasible by that time.

I'd like to drop some 4850X2 cards into my main box as well..... so fr they are way to expencive. And If I unerstood right there are some driver issues with the ATI X2 cards.
 
Its a good thing i cant afford to buy a gpu right now. With the new larger WU's coming out i would have a hard time choosing. But AMD/ATI is looking more appealing thse days

I say call the 4x X2 GPU card boxen a V8. Then if it has a quad-core CPU in it then it would be a 4-barrel carb V8. Theres another crowbar on this thread's tracks for ya. :p


 
That's a lot of muscle for just 396 watts! Please give us another report when the large proteins start to roll out. Nice job EA.

Yes, I was shocked about the power draw as well.
Based on reviews of the 4850 ICEq versions, they use 25% less power then the stock 4850 or about equat to the ATI 3870 series.
Also, the AMD 9350e is a low power cpu and that is helping a lot as well.
Those quads with the 64w TDP help keeps the temp extremely low and easy to cool.

A 500 w PSU could support this rig, as long as it had a single rail 12v ..
At 396 watts .... it is a low power folding hoss .....

(Yeah, I am from the south and we say hoss)

I've got the same PSU supporting 3x 9800GX2 (6 GPU cores) with room to spare.

If you keep an eye on the power draw you can get a lot out of a good PSU.

 
Alright n00b question for Evil...

when you run these 4*4850's do you not fold with the CPU at all? Or whats the deal?

 
Well, I had some time to do some cable management to my GPU boxen.

As you can see, it is much improved from the photos at the start of this thread.

Is that a Centurion 5 for your GPU boxen? How is cooling with the side panels on?

Cooling is pretty good. I have a Sythe 80 mm fan in the front pushing air toward the GPU.
I have a low rmp 120 mm fan in the back running but since the AMD 9350e runs so cool, it just helps to move some air.

It will only be in that case for about 6 months until I get my house built, then it goes into the rack mount case.

Yeah, I don't like taking them offline to do it, but it always seems worth it once I got it done.
I found all the zip ties & zip tie mounts at home depot for very cheap.
 
Love it, very close to my rig...less 2 video cards.... Glad to see the monster 750w single-rail Corsair is treating you well, I have a K9A2 Platinum and same PSU. Nice to see I will be able to support quad-ATI cards. Could you review a few FPS games with this setup? I need some persuasion to fill the rest of the PCIe slots....

Single 60a 12v rail FTW.....
