Hey people, I'm builing a new computer for my friend, gonna let him experience Doom III( he's not a pc gamer so this will be sweet). Anyways, I have come between 2 video cards: a geforce fx 5700 256mb, or a radeon9600xt 128/256mb. I thought about getting him a 5900xt, but he won't fork out the money for it. So those are the two I'm torn between right now

try to get a 6600 or a 6800Le either one will be close to a 9800 256mb or 5900 in performance.

My 2cents. 9600xt. It's about as good as it gets for that price range. Will play doom3 fine according to the Doom3 hardware guide on this site.

yeah that's what I was thinking. I'm gonna try snagging him the 256mb 9600xt so that should be a big differince in gaming for him over a gamecube X ).

I would go with the 9600XT out of those choices but he would be much better off trying to get one of the new 6600's when they come out or one of the 6800nu which you can find for under $300. A 6800nu would be more then twice as fast as a 9600XT.

true, but this computer is also for the family use, so I couldn't really go higher than 1000( even though I hit 1060). Anyways, I ended up getting the 9600xt 256mb, cause it was only about 150, and we couldn't wait, it had to be today. As for the other parts, I got a crucial( or something) 512 stick of ddr400. And got an msi kt400A mobo and an athlon 2500. I'm just gonna set the fsb to 200 so he can basically have a 3200. This should be a kickass system becuase he was only using some crappy pIII and still hasen't figured out the beuty of pc games yet. Anyways, I'm also getting paid to put it together :D

the 5700ultra will rape 9600xt in Doom3.... and almost the performance of 9800pro in doom3..... The FX cards are geared up for the Doom engine.. not ATI...

I'd say get a nice 5900XT off of ebay for a good price. Both the 5700 and 9600 are really too weak by todays standards, especially the 9600 when we're talking about Doom3.
