ATI or Nvidia

I have a question and it is about which one has a better Open GL driver set,..I know ATI is developing there Open GL ...enhancing it to some point..however tho...does anyone know what one would be better? There is an online game that I play and it has always ran great on Nvidia's Cards...ATI and there driver issues has struggled...is it any better with the 5000 series or just about the same as it was?...if anyone has suggestions...please advise..thank you

The ATI 5800 cards just recently updated to Open GL 4.0. I'm not sure about the whole 5000 series in general.

Currently I have an old 8800gt and I was considering ...getting an ATI 5770/5830 but also at the same time thinking I should wait and see what the new mid range Fermi will do..what kind of watts it will use and how much heat..I have right now...an O/C i650 @ 4ghz and has a Seasonic S12 650w PSU...or I could just get a 5870 ATI and be done with it for a while..

The Online game is called Second Life...a friend of mine ..had an ATI card and it didnt do so well in that game, and then she went to get an Nvidia and it ran alot better...so that is why I was asking to see if anyone knew what one would be better...an ATI or Nvidia

The 5770 uses about the same amount of power as the 8800gt. But I wouldn't hold my breath for a mid-range Fermi, it just does not seem very likely at all at the moment.

Also, don't get a 5830. It's just a waste of money.

As for AMD/NVidia in Second life, are you going to give us specific details about the cards she used, or are we supposed to take your word for it that the two cards were completely equal in all other respects? After all, if she changes from something like a 2600 pro to a 9800GTX, then obviously the game will run better with the NVidia card, it's about 3 times better.

like Mr. Pedantic says, don't get a 5830. The 5770 is a pretty good card for the price right now. A 5850 is still the best bang for the buck if you can find one for $250-270 which isn't too difficult if you look around.

From the people that I know that actually use OpenGL applications, they always tell me use Nvidia video cards.

ATI is getting there from what I have read, but if your work depends on OpenGL application, it's best to go with Nvidia.

P.S. What is the name of the OpenGL online game you play?

If your friend has personally tried both products and recommends a Nvidia card. Nvidia it is :)

P.S. Also what OpenGL version is Second Life "optimized" for?

That would really depend on what ATI card and what Nvidia card. I mean, if you go from an Nvidia GT 310 to an ATI 5870, the ATI card is going to win by several orders of magnitude.

Nvidia may have a performance edge between similar performance cards, but it isn't so much better as to make up the difference between segment gaps.

So if Second Life is all you primarily play, I would go with like a used 9600GT or something cheap.

I would look on Google and see whether the issue stops at Catalyst 9.6 or whether it keeps going on to 10.3.

I have been doing some searching...the company known as Linden Labs who operate the game of Second Life doesnt seem to support ATI very well...there is a Jira here...about the issues.

tell me your thoughts on the issue and what would you do ?
One thing your completely leaving out here is quality of the graphics card. That link is for someone using a laptop. Laptop integrated graphics suck for modern games, unless you buy some super high dollar gaming laptop, they usually have decent onboard graphics.. The example you gave earlier could be that the Nvidia card was much more superior than the ATI card in regards to specs of the card. There's way, way more to buying a card than just ATI or Nvidia.

Well, people say that 9.7 and 9.8 fixed it, but many of the people having issues seem to be running ancient video cards (Radeon 9xxx series and their mobile equivalents).

But we can't really help you unless you tell us what you have and what you are trying to do. Is Second Life the primary game you play? If you play other games, what is the most demanding one? What resolution is your monitor? What is the rest of your system? What is your budget?

I mean, people are recommending the 5870 (great card, I love mine) - but if all you do is play Second Life then a $400 video card is a complete waste of money when a $70 one would work just as well.

This is good advice. The 5830 is not a great bargain for it's performance, but the 5850 is a pretty sweet deal. Looking at the initial benchmarks the 5850 is a better deal than the gtx 470.

If you play CS:Source you need a Nvidia card so you can see through heaven on nuke from hut and de_dust 2 has weird lighting issues NEVER resolved by ATI. However, unless you're competitive then who cares.

If you use DX81 it fixes that problem. I've using it on ATi cards since the x1900's when the issue first popped up.

I play CSS competitively and more than any other game and I'd rather have a 5770/5830 now and be forced to use DX81 than pick-up an older Nvidia card or wait for the midrange Fermi.

I have tried that fix except flashbangs last much longer under 81 and under mat_dxlevel 95 flashes are less atrocious.
