I am in the market for a new video card, it doesnt have to be anything special but i dont want something incredibly outdated already. I wanna keep the cost under $130. I was just curious what brand would give me the best bang for my buc, an ati or nvidia chipset?

4890 is the best performing in most applications. Unless noise levels are a deciding factor...go with the HD 4890.

You can get a 4870 for less than 100, especially used, right here on the forums.

ATi currently has the best price/performance hands down, but personally I stick with nV cards because of ATi's drivers.

Sorry but in my 6 year history if ATI video cars and transitions from xp -> vista -> win 7 I have encoutered any driver problems only because of my own fault or failed OC. Btw to OP -> ATI.

ATI has a better price/performance for all price points currently.
So I vote ATI.
Its not that nVIdias cards are bad (they aren't at all) but for the same price you can get ATI for cheaper.

4870/4890, or a 260. A lot of graphics power to be had there for at really good prices.

Personally I stick to Ati, because of Nv's drivers.

Eh I think Nvidia and ATI drivers are equally good/bad.

Wrong, Nvidia drivers are just as bad as ATI ones.

I work on my roommates SLI setup all the time....Just like borderlands, its a TWIMTBP game, and he is having HUGE stuttering problems. Been like that with the last 3-4 driver release.

But at the same time ATI has driver bugs in borderlands as well.

Nvidia drivers are on par now with ATI. Hate to say it, but its true.

My friend's sli rig has huge problems in Dirt2 as well. I agree, always good to inform the ignorant.

What about Matrox and S3? They both still make discrete graphics!

Depends on pricing in your country - i got Twintech GTX-260 with accelero twin turbo cooler for 15 euros less than stock 4890 costed.

This is a rather funny question. Over the past 10 years the balance of power between ATI and Nvidia has swung to both extremes several times. The initial Geforce 1/2/3 line. ATI's 8500/9700. Geforce 6/7. Now we are back to ATI. I guess the Nvidia fans are waiting to see what happens in the spring.

Or maybe not waiting and grabbing an ATI card in the meantime. ;)

Before I upgraded, my BFG 640mb 8800 gts still ran nearly everything smooth as butter.........

You're buying a graphics card, not buying into a brand.

Choose your budget (anywhere from pennies, up to 600 quid), then look at reviews for cards around that budget. Both companies have entire lines of GPU's for multiple price points. When you eventually need to upgrade you just go through the same process. The company that makes the card is irrelevant.

huh? doesn't make sense.

It was a bit of sarcasm aimed at the below post.

For Windows, both companies drivers are more or less on par with one another. Nix is another matter, but who buys a gaming card for just Nix?

You sir, have opened up pandora's box of arguments here. This discussion will go on until one of the companies dies out.

Personally, ATI, no doubt about it.
Best bang for buck.
Nab yourself a 4870.

I don't see nearly the driver issues that some people claim with ATI, that is mostly reputation based on things from years ago.

Only issue I have with them is less games seem to be supported on Crossfire then with SLI. But, if one is only buying one card (or a single GPU card) then that is moot.

I will buy what I think is the best, or if on a budget best bang for the buck at the time, I've never been a fanboy. Right now, probably ATI but shop around too of course. Don't let any claims about ATI's drivers scare you.

depends on your gaming resolution at 1920x1080 and below I believe 5770 is good choice, you'll be quite futureproof with Dx11, and you can even have eyefinity. 5750 is good for 1680x1050 and below.
